9 Year Veggiversary - 9 years ago today a little rooster named Napoleon changed our lives. You see we ate meat, chicken, beef and pork. We bought into all the marketing bullshit of free range, grass fed, humanely raised. We felt we couldn't live without cheese. We loved bacon. Then this rooster. This little less than 5 lb rooster, with the heart of an eagle, changed us. It was a Sunday and we had the chickens out in the yard. We had come in quick to grab something and heard a commotion. Outside we saw a dog. A specific breed of bird dog raised by our neighbor down the lane. We ran out as the dog ran with Napoleon in his mouth. Tony and I yelled and he dropped him. When we got to Napoleon he was alive, barely, with most of his back feathers missing and at least one puncture wound through his abdomen. Don't believe all that bullshit a bird dog raiser gives you about "they wouldn't hurt the bird" it is just lies. Tony grabbed Napoleon and headed for the emergency care vet. I then realized that we were missing our two hens. You see Napoleon went head long into the fight to protect his girls. I eventually found them both unharmed but so scared they didn't come out of the coop for a week. Tony eventually returned with Napoleon, this little scrapper was hurt but not "out", it took a month of daily wound cleanings, pain med injections and love to get him back, but we did. He lived for 7 more months until he was killed by a predator. So back a second to him in the yard. I remember looking down at the exposed skin, with tears in our eyes and thought "Why am I crying for this chicken when I have a freezer of chicken in the basement?". "Why do we love one animal and eat another?". It clicked. We made the connection. We were vegetarian in that moment. In the short couple of weeks that followed it became clear that being vegan was the only truly ethical choice because dairy, eggs and fish were all equally horrific industries. This was 9 years ago. Napoleon is gone now but we never forget the gift of truth that this little bird gave us. Please go vegan today. #vegan #veganlife #veggieversary #maketheconnection #whyloveonebuteattheother
When my guy knows I’m a week away from my 1 YR veggiversary and he says “you know what sounds good? Chicken with bacon for lunch.. do you want that?!” Uh.. no, I don’t.
ALSO I JUST REALISED. YESTERDAY WAS MY SECOND VEGGIEVERSARY.
Second veganversary is in a week, clearly I had a long transitional period XD
But aww yeah meat-free for two years :D
Tomorrow makes one year of being a vegetarian and I absolutely love it. To be honest, I don't even get cravings for meat. Which is pretty cool, I guess. The only thing that sucks is all of the comments and snarky comments I get about it. If it's not people telling me they're sorry for me, it's my dad making fun of me by saying "oh, no animals suffered for this blah blah blah". Or it's all people want to talk to me about sometimes. It gets annoying very fast.
One year ago today, I decided to go vegetarian for reasons of ethics :) (Decided three days later to go vegan, my actual veganversary is on the 20th.) First steps are important!
In honor of my Veggieversary/Half Birthday:
How long have you been vegetarian? 1 year :D
When did you become vegetarian? I didn't take down the specific day, but it was definitely mid-late march. I decided to celebrate it on my Half Birthday, so here we are!
What were your eating habits like before becoming vegetarian? I was a pescetarian for a few months to segway into vegetarianism. I think it really made for a seamless transition.
What did your family think? They thought it was hilarious at first and they were very eager to see me fail. Which just made me that much more determined. ;p
Have you had any resistance from friends or family? I had to endure a lot of snide comments before they accepted it. My mom came around much more quickly than I anticipated and I've even inspired her to cook healthier. My friends still make fun of/tease me.
Is it hard not eating meat? Not at all for me, but I didn't like anything other than chicken/fish to begin with. It honestly feels so right as if I've been doing it forever. I will say that Chemo put a strain on me being a vegetarian (like it did with a lot of things). I'm lucky I had an understanding doctor who encouraged me, unlike my hospital staff. Even when my wbc's and iron levels were really low, I stuck with it and opted for an all natural iron supplement made of nature's finest beets to help me out just a bit haha.
What are some of your favourite foods? I really love falafels, broccoli, spinach, and beans omg beans.
What are your favourite treats? Pistachios forever!! And fruit/bread with nutella. All hail nutella.
Do you spend more or less of food since being vegetarian or vegan? I haven't taken spending into account particularly. I can say that I am more conscious of portion size, ingredients, and stuff like that not by choice but by default due to my vegetarianism.
Will you raise your children (if applicable) vegetarian? I'll get there when I get there with whoever I get there with :)
Today is my five month anniversary of being an herbivore.
