Can you tell me more about 4. willing to sacrifice for one another?
so this was a prompt from @tenok way back when i was first asking for prompts! it is not terribly fleshed out, and there is no snippet, but there’s also no time like the present to figure out what this could be, so let’s do it together, shall we? the original prompt was basically asking for something a bit reminiscent of john selling his soul to azazel to save dean. so it could be dean doing the same or something in that vein.
i think what it’s going to end up being is dean thinking john is stuck somewhere, and that he’s going to have trade something or do something drastic to get him back, and john’s going to show up just in time for dean to not have to make the sacrifice. this will lead to an argument about dean thinking john would ever want him to do that, which might lead to smooches.
but honestly, now that im sort of talking it through, what i think might be even more interesting is a fic from dean’s pov reflecting on the fact he’d give up anything for john. maybe a dean who--now that sam’s left--is more protective of john than he’s ever been. i wouldn’t really want this to be a fic about the gaping sam-shaped hole, but rather a look at how dean changes when it’s just him and john. yes, it’s a result of sam, but i don’t necessarily want the intensity of dean’s focus and care and protectiveness of john to JUST be bc he’s spiraling after sam, but rather without sam there he has to put his obsessive protectiveness somewhere.
and i like the idea of john being at first put off by this. irritated that dean seems to think john is suddenly incapable of taking care of himself. until he realizes what’s happening, which isn’t that dean thinks john is helpless, but just that this is who he’s turned dean into after years of telling him to watch out for sammy. what’s dean’s purpose if sammy is gone? who can he watch out for? there’s only john. and that’s when john leans into it. starts liking it maybe a little too much. maybe the strange insular relationship dean had with sam, that borderline ALWAYS inappropriate affection and intimacy, just shifts to dean and john, and now that john knows what it’s like it really sets him off to where they’re both kind of obsessive about each other. dean hates when john tries to work with other hunters, john hates when dean tries to hook up with people, they both get equally vicious about people trying to interfere, and they both get furious when they feel the other is being reckless.
this would obviously run parallel to john’s need to control what dean does and dean’s desire to be controlled by john while ALSO wanting to keep john safe. dean torn between being john’s baby and being a mama bear, so to speak.
this is admittedly getting away from the prompt, so it might need tweaking. but that’s where my head is at with it at the moment!!!
