Understanding Vicarious Trauma
Caring for others is powerful, but it can also quietly hurt us. This is called vicarious trauma — when hearing or witnessing someone else’s pain starts to feel like your own.
Therapists, nurses, first responders, teachers, even parents or caregivers can experience it. The stories we carry build up like smoke from a fire — until it gets in our lungs, our thoughts, our hearts.
Feeling emotionally drained or hopeless
Nightmares or trouble sleeping
Headaches, anxiety, or numbness
Remember: needing support doesn’t mean you’re weak. It means you’ve been carrying too much, for too long.
✨ Protect yourself the way you protect others:
Set boundaries and take breaks
Journal or practice grounding rituals
Seek trauma-informed therapy or support groups
Do one joyful thing each day
You don’t have to burn out to prove you care. Show up for yourself, the way you show up for others.
