From "The Gong" to the Google Drive: The Ultimate Guide to Tape Preservation
Growing up in Wollongong, we all have those moments we wish we could relive. Maybe it’s a dusty old cassette of a concert at the WIN Entertainment Centre, a VHS of your kids playing at Stuart Park, or old camcorder footage from a family picnic on the escarpment.
At Tapes to Digital Wollongong, we understand that your old tapes aren't just plastic and magnetic strip; they are a direct link to your past.
In this guide, we will walk you through why it’s time to move your memories from physical tapes to digital formats.
The Problem: Your Memories Are Trapped
The biggest challenge with analog media (like VHS, Hi8, and MiniDV) is that you need obsolete equipment to enjoy them. Most of us don't have a functioning VCR or camcorder anymore, meaning those priceless moments are essentially locked away.
The Solution: We Make Digitisation Easy in Wollongong
We take the stress and technical jargon out of the process. Our local, professional service is designed for Wollongong residents who want to preserve their history without a hassle.
We specialise in converting:
All Video Tapes: (VHS, S-VHS, Betamax, Hi8, Digital8, Video8, MiniDV).
Audio Cassettes: (Standard cassettes, microcassettes).
Open Reel-to-Reel: (Audio and film).
What You Get: High-Quality, Modern Formats
Once our experts complete the Tapes to Digital conversion, we provide your files in the most common modern formats (MP4, AVI, or MOV).
This means you can:
Watch instantly on any computer, tablet, or smartphone.
Stream them to your Smart TV to watch with the whole family.
Backup your files to a secure Google Drive, Dropbox, or external hard drive.
Why Choose Tapes to Digital Wollongong?
Local Reliability: We are your neighbours. You aren’t mailing your invaluable tapes across the country.
Expertise: Our team understands the nuances of magnetic media and uses professional-grade broadcast decks to ensure the best possible transfer quality.
Transparent Pricing: No hidden fees, just straightforward pricing for quality work.
Ready to Relive Your Memories?
Don't wait until it’s too late. The longer you wait, the greater the risk of tape degradation. Let us help you unlock your family’s history.

PSA for writers doing "period pieces" that take place in the 90s
We did not call them VHS the way we say DVDs we called them VIDEOTAPES
Plz watch a movie from the time period and pay attention to the language you hear characters use. Any cop drama or teen comedy will do.
"Did you get that on tape?"
"We have to review the tapes"
I can kinda understand the confusion. Now when the format was new you would hear "now on VHS" in advertisements but that eventually shifted to "now on video"
We still use 'video' for recorded media. That's what the V stands for. Video Home System.
You put video tapes in a VCR.
Have you ever seen a strip of film? Tapes work the same way. The information is saved to the 'tape'; coiled black film found underneath the hard shell protecting it.
There is no menu. You put a tape in a VCR and press play on the remote or the VCR.
VCRs also allowed you to record whatever you saw on tv, so if you wanted to watch something but couldn't be home at the time, you could program your VCR to start recording at a specific time.
Video tapes also held HOURS of film. A video of a show you buy at the store might have two or three episodes (because they wanted you to buy more of them) but if you taped stuff at home, you could put 6 hours or more of something on there.
This is also how we did bootlegs. People would go to the theater and record the movie at a decent angle, go home and make copies of the tape, and then sell them at a fraction of the official release price. But the sound quality sucked most of the time..
People used to set their VCRs and record hours of their fav show every week. All you had to do was fast forward towards the end of the previous recording, press stop and press record for the new stuff.

Writing Music shuffle for Mar 6
It is occurring to me my taste in music can occasionally be dated. No, I will never live in the now (mom). Here's a song in honor of dated things like VHS and magnetic tape.
