Okay so hear me out…

Don’t hate me for this but I’ve been seeing a few posts saying that Toby is a pretty bad father and that he doesn’t care about Eve and only cares for Avery, and while I can understand how people might feel this way I kinda disagree.

Okay so first off to be fair Toby didn’t even realize that he had a biological daughter until the end of The Hawthorne Legacy. With that being said he didn’t want her to live at the Hawthorne house (understandable) so what did he do… he took her with him to personally take care of her himself.

Then, in the Final Gambit we come to find out that almost immediately after Toby took in Eve she promptly sold him out/had him kidnapped by Vincent Blake (Toby’s grandfather) in exchange for hoping to get some money she thought she deserved. (She also thought she deserved to live at Hawthorne house and have the inheritance, not Avery)

Now I don’t know about you guys but if I had a daughter who personally sold me out to my grandfather and had me kidnapped just for some money… yeah I’m probably not going to have the best relationship with her afterwards just saying 😬.

All this in mind I’m not saying that Toby is the best father in town (he has his flaws) but I imagine it would be hard to try and form a paternal relationship after all that went down. So yeah I don’t really blame him for not being that involved in her life after that.

Alice Hawthorne's Links

Since not everything is known regarding the overarching plot about Alice, I had some thoughts to share. So, recently I've been told that JLB stated there are enough clues in the og trilogy to basically solve the mystery. Well, I have some theories. My mind keeps being drawn back to that message from after the release of TBH and the hardcovers of TIG where some people got the scrambled sentence: There are clues in The Final Gambit. Ever since then, my mind has been mulling over what those clues could be.

Me and a few people went over it and the best ties at that time were regarding Lyra and her father. Going back to when the gang was pouring over Tobias's files of all the people he screwed over, we found a few interesting things about a father, his child who died, and the father's profession. I'm not gonna go into detail but that was the premise. Now, given that we have some more insight to Alice, I just had an idea. What if she has her own type of personal hidden history with the Blakes?

We know Tobias and Toby's ties with the Blake family but we don't know Alice's. So I went back through the book and found the part where Avery and Jamie were talking to Nan. Here are those parts to refresh the memory:

Based on the second snippet where Nan lists out some of the potential things that maybe came to mind for Avery as she's trying to assess the dynamics between Tobias and Vincent, I think given our context now, it may be safe to say that Alice went through stuff. As Eve has been among the kidnapped group alongside Gigi and Slate, there has to be reason for that. And I think definitely, that maybe whatever happened with Alice during the time the Hawthornes were involved with the Blakes, that may have been a huge shifting point for her but she didn't feel the effects of resentment and anger as much until later on.

But anyways, I don't have too much to say, just wanted to bring this up as it's one of the only other major things we learn about Alice in the original books so whoever wanted to could try putting together this together further.

This is going to be a long one...

Okay, can we talk about the rounds of chess matches that happened in Vincent Blake's ranch at the end of TFG?

So it was:

- Toby vs Avery

- Toby vs Eve

- Avery vs Eve

And these were the conditions:

Win Both

Toby - he'd get to go back in hiding and no one would be ever the wiser on who he was and what he was doing.

Avery - she'd get to get Grayson back from "captivity", her loved ones wouldn't be threatened again and Sheffield Grayson's case would be kept a secret (therefore not threatening her and Oren's positions)

Eve - she'd win all five seals aka the keys to Blake's kingdom

Win one, Lose one

Toby - he would have to announce his existence as Toby Hawthorne

Avery - Blake would let Grayson go and never hurt her loved ones again, but the Sheffield Grayson case would be exposed

Eve - she would only win one seal

Lose Both

Toby - become Tobias Blake of his own will and stay in the ranch forever

Avery - she'd have to do Blake a favour (blank check $$$)

Eve - Blake would let her be in the service of whoever he gave her to (that sounds pretty unnerving esp the analogy he lives by that is "boys will always be boys" like I don't even wanna imagine what he would do to her)

If we observe all the terms closely, the person with the least to lose if they lost both matches was actually Toby. If Eve lost both, like I said, something ugly would happen. If Avery lost, she could damn easily lose her inheritance if Blake just said he wanted everything. So Toby decided to throw Eve's match because he didn't want her to lose both and warned Avery during their match to not be overconfident. Which meant that he was pretty set on protecting both his daughters which led to him becoming Tobias Blake.

I personally believe that Toby didn't want to win the match against Avery because he didn't want to come back as a Hawthorne (as I believe that he was ashamed of his father's actions and he wanted nothing to do with the name).

On the other hand, the person with the most to gain if they won both, would be Avery since Eve would probably (she should) have been okay with just one seal. But as we know, Ave had plans of her own so she threw her match and let Eve win.

What I'm saying is... I think Blake set Toby up because he knew that Toby would choose to protect his daughters. Taking that into account, the person who'd win both would either be Avery or Eve and at this point, Avery would have more to lose than Eve. I feel like he expected Avery to beat Eve since the results of that would allow him to still have control of the board.

Avery would win both but as she mentioned through the thoughts in her head, Blake could still get her via other methods. Eve would only win one which meant Blake still had four other seals and as Blake is most likely biased towards males (so he probably thinks females are incompetent), he would just give them to other people.

But at the end of the day, Avery was just too smart for him to handle so he didn't have a choice but to have a truce with her.

Moral of the story, don't mess with the Heiress.

Okay eve is so repulsive to me to the point where it’s not even funny just the mention of her name makes me disgusted the fact that this little piece of useless Bacteria rlly thinks she has a chance against Avery and she annoys me so much specifically for what she did and what she does to Toby he literally took her in protected her from the dangerous of being in the Hawthorne house and its legacy something that even Avery didn’t get to have and this bitch had the audacity to betray him and then come around a book later like Oo I am so poor I am so alone blah blah I came from nothing so it’s okay that I betrayed every who trusted me causing both physical and mental harm

Like Avery grew up dirt poor then spent 2 years living with her also barely making it step sister and abusive turd over here you don’t see her doing that

I hope eve blows up

I hate Eve but i find her interesting. She has potential to be a very complex villain, considering I see where she's coming from. She has been mistreated her entire life and when she found her father, he turned out to love his something-like-step-daughter more (no shade to toby and avery, i love them)

Im not excusing her actions, she's very much a villain but i really want her to turn more complex in the next books because she definitely has the potential to be interesting

The other tig villains (like vincent and tobias) were interesting but she has potential to be more than them

I just don't want her to turn into this just evil villain, i want her to be right about something

No I get it. Like an anti hero but not exactly? A complex villain with an actual sympathetic point. That would be really cool to see.
