"So, how was my tour? I showed you all the cool stuff I could, I think."
It was Vinessa's first time on the Defense Force, Staph having just finished to show them around. They had stopped at a restaurant, Staph making their way through a plate of mollusks while Vinessa enjoyed small snacks made of insects on sticks. They still weren't used to the fact they could buy food for themself again, much less to establishments that somehow had a bit of everything for every alien's diet.
"It was great, thank you for taking on my request," they answered, "I know it was a weird thing to ask so sudden."
"Nah, it was no problem, you're welcome here anytime! Would be fun to have company on the job."
"Wouldn't that cause you trouble with your bosses though?"
Staph leaned closer, a gesture that made Vinessa's inner vines thump vigorously on their chest. "Hey, nobody needs to know. I can just teleport you in and out."
The mention of teleporting brought Vinessa down to more pressing thoughts than their silly crush.
"Speaking of that, you didn't bring that tool with you, do you?"

Drown in your Sorrows
The tent was dark, no candles to light up the space with a warm glow. A dish of water sat still on a pedestal in the middle of the room. It looked like a black mirror with no reflection, no ripple to disturb it. Ciaragan stood over the water, staring into it intently. Deep within the small pool she saw another face staring back at her. It was without color and featureless, but she knew who it was.
“I see you,” she whispered into the water.
“Who-…who’s there?”
“See me.”
The other figure whipped around, searching for the source of the intrusion. A violet-eyed shadow stood in the corner of the room, only just visible in the already dim surroundings.
“Show yourself!” cried the other figure.
“Damn you.”
“….Wh-what?”
“Damn you. You, who tried to take everything away from me. You, who stole what I love most. You, who defiled my bloodline with your filth. Damn you to hell.”
The figure collapsed onto a bed in the corner of the room, clutching their skull in clear distress. “Get out of here! Get out of my head!”
“I’m not in your head, child. But I can be.”
Black water trickled down the stone walls of the chamber and began to surround the Other. It rose rapidly, filling the room until a sliver of air remained on top. The figure struggled, but could barely keep their lips above the surface, screaming.
Ciaragan laughed, until the laugh strained and hurt her throat. Her face inches from the water, she gazed with wild hunger at the scene as it played out before her.
Suddenly, the tent flap stirred.
Snapping to attention, Ciaragan turned to face the entrance. Faervell peeked his head in the tent.
“All set to go, Ci?”
“Of course, brother. Help me with my bags?”
He smirked, half expecting this, and moved to lift the larger of the group. Pausing for a moment, he turned to face his twin.
“Were you… laughing? Just now?”
“Oh! Yes. I remembered something that made me…laugh.”
“What was so funny?”
“You wouldn’t get it.” She waved her hand, dismissing the matter. “Let’s go.”
In a small monastery off the coast of Kalimdor, Vinessa hit the cold floor with a hard crack as the watery vision suddenly disappeared. She reached for her wrist, trapped underneath the weight of her body and falling unnaturally limp like only a broken bone can. She whimpered in pain. The violet-eyed shadow was gone. The water was gone. She was alone again.
She was always alone.
@pyrar for mention and @jessipalooza for the idea :>
