At half-past twelve the train stopped at Benares.

This is Benares (Varanasi) in the 1870s. It looks rather grander than the narration about "brick houses and clay huts" implies.

Elephants were bathing in the waters of the sacred river, and groups of Indians, despite the advanced season and chilly air, were performing solemnly their pious ablutions.

I can't find any contemporary pictures of the elephants but here are some people bathing in the Ganges in the 1870s.

What would these divinities think of India, anglicised as it is to-day, with steamers whistling and scudding along the Ganges, frightening the gulls which float upon its surface, the turtles swarming along its banks, and the faithful dwelling upon its borders?

I'm not 100% sure if this steamer is from the right period, but it is a steamer on the Ganges so hopefully gives some impression.

I don't know if this, the Munger Fort, is the fort Verne intended; it is what comes up when you google "chupenie fort" but I can't figure out why. Anyway, it is a fort that was visible from the Ganges. This illustration is from the late 19th century.

This is a view of Ghazipur from the same era and the same artist (which means it probably didn't look much like this in the 1870s, but it's the best I can do).

This is the bottom of a set of drawings depicting the opium trade at Patna, from 1882.

Monghir, a more than European town, for it is as English as Manchester or Birmingham, with its iron foundries, edgetool factories, and high chimneys puffing clouds of black smoke heavenward.

I'm sorry not to be able to find more recent images, but this is Monghir (Munger) in 1804.
