The first episode of the radio series The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy aired on March 8, 1978. The series was created by Doctor Who script editor Douglas Adams. The original concept was for every broadcast to be the world to end in a different way with the series being titled "The Ends of the Earth". However, the series ended up spring boarding off The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy that was a concept brought up in the first script. The series and its sequels inspired a book series, a record series, a computer game, a TV series, and a theatrical movie. The original radio cast included Simon Jones as Arthur Dent, Geoffrey McGivern as Ford Prefect, Peter Jones as the Book, Mark Wing-Davey as Zaphod, Susan Sheridan as Trillian, Stephen Moore as Marvin the Paranoid Android, and Richard Vernon as Slartibartfast.
