My feelings on alastor are quite complicated.

he was my favorite character when season one dropped. I like his voice and his style and thought it was cool to see a Black asexual character wield such power.

But after thinking about it, I’m a bit irritated by the fact that Alastor is ace. Having Hazbin’s only canon asexual rep be characterized as cold, secretive and uncaring perpetuates some icky stereotypes. But ace people get so little representation in media that it’s quite upsetting to see the fandom completely disregard his repulsion to sex and refer to him as “a bottom” and shit like that.

And it’s clear that Viv had no intention of representing voodou as anything other than a dark magic to make her oc look super cool and mysterious. It only adds to the misconceptions about Black spirituality. I’m pretty sure she only made Alastor creole so she could use the symbols, because his sinner form just looks like a white guy. Yet, whenever I see people trying to whitewash him or say “he’s half creole that doesn’t mean he’s Black” it boils my blood.

This show and its fandom is so strange.

Mini head canon and for my fellow black people, ifykyk. I know Alastor is Louisiana voodoo based but I like to think that Alastor changes a High John root on him in his human life, for culture reasons. If Annie(from Sinners) who is Louisiana Creole practice hoodoo then Alastor can have high John root. I won’t explain more but you get what lm saying.

The Veil of Obatala

In the beginning, before the world was shaped, the skies stretched vast and empty, and the seas churned without form. Obatala, the gentle and wise Orisha, was chosen by Olodumare to descend and bring order to chaos. He was given a golden chain to climb down from the heavens, a gourd of sand, and a white hen to shape the earth.

As he prepared for his sacred mission, Obatala’s heart swelled with pride. The world-to-be rested in his hands, and with each step toward the edge of the heavens, he envisioned lush lands, flowing rivers, and creatures teeming with life. But the task was weighty, and Obatala sought comfort in palm wine offered by mischievous spirits.

The sweet, heady drink clouded his mind, and his steps faltered as he descended the golden chain. When he reached the chaos below, his hands moved sluggishly. The sand poured unevenly, and the hen scratched haphazardly, scattering landforms across the waters. Mountains rose jagged and distorted, valleys were shallow where they should have been deep. Obatala's vision was blurred, and his once-perfect world was misshapen.

When the haze lifted, Obatala looked upon his creation and saw his mistakes. He wept bitter tears for the imperfections, especially for the first humans he had molded, who bore marks of his drunken hand. He pleaded with Olodumare for guidance, his humility raw and unguarded.

Olodumare, ever wise and forgiving, gave Obatala a new task: to become the Orisha of purity, wisdom, and redemption. His white garments would forever remind him and others of the clarity and peace of a clear mind. Obatala vowed to watch over all, especially those with physical differences, honoring their unique beauty as creations of his humbled heart.

From that day, Obatala walked the earth in kindness, correcting what he could, protecting the vulnerable, and teaching the power of forgiveness—starting with himself. The world he shaped remained imperfect, but through its imperfections, it thrived with the resilience and love he nurtured.

And so, Obatala's gentle spirit became a beacon for all who sought balance, wisdom, and the strength to rise above their mistakes.
