This pervasive idea that Spock and Kirk are like the OG slash gay couple feels incredibly American. I mean, there’s a reason there’s an Asian genre dedicated specifically to gay ships. I have a lot of respect for Spirk but the idea of fandom, shipping, slash has existed way longer than that. Spirk just made it mainstream for a wider international audience spurred even further by the creation and existence of the internet. But every culture has had their own gay ship from their own content way longer than that. Spirk isn’t as OG as people think it is.
