Thursday, April 15: Leash Law, “Fight”
Wade Black sang on underrated records with Crimson Glory and Seven Witches, and in both cases he was unfairly compared with his more legendary predecessors even though his performances were quite strong. So with Leash Law as his own group to lead, he should’ve been poised to deliver another sturdy banger without any baggage, but Dogface unfortunately turned out to be one of his weaker efforts. “Fight” started the record in promising fashion, with pummeling guitars and typically sterling percussion from Richard Christy, and Black worked as many corners of his range as he could within the track’s runtime. But in trying to do everything, he also sounded strained in spots and in general there was a sense that he was trying too hard. To be fair, Leash Law was never likely to set the world on fire- even with the semi-respectable pedigree, the band was a bit out of place and a bit out of step. But it was still unfortunate, as these were good players and “Fight” showed potential even with Black’s histrionics.
