#waitress problems

Not to be all ‘ok boomer’, but I work in a restaurant, and people over a certain age just become paralyzed with fear when I point to the QR code on the table that links to the menu. A woman today said “Oh my god, are you serious??” I always nicely tell them how it works, but they throw both their hands up, interrupt my one-sentence explanation, and are shocked that they have to ask for physical menus. I totally understand if the people are really old, but for a lot of people, I’m just tempted to say “you know, these are not only super easy, they’re definitely not going anywhere and you are gonna have to learn it eventually!”

guys, please be nice to the waitstaff at restaurants (and really any customer service worker in general). the restaurant i work at was so backed up today and i was running around like crazy trying to stay on top of things and some of my customers were so rude to me that i got home and just started sobbing. to name a few, i had a woman who WOULD NOT sit where her reservation was, and blocked our waiting list for 10 minutes arguing with me because she wouldn’t sit there. we also ran out of roll-ups at one point and one man flipped out because we couldn’t get his utensils when we sat him. but i had one woman tell me to take my time and that there was no rush on her table. i almost cried out of relief. please be like the third woman when you go out to eat, please.

So um...

I'm a waitress at a restaurant, and yesterday I had an... interesting conversation with two customers

(I'll use a fake name ok? ok).

me: Welcome!, my name is Noah and I will be serving you today :D

man: Noah? honey, your cousin is called like that, right?

Woman (looking at the menu): ...yes

me: That's great! Noah is a nice name :D

woman: Ah, but Noah died a few months ago.

me: D:

man: Noah? When?

woman: last year, did you forget?

man: no... wait, I'm talking about your other cousin.

woman: ah yes, Noah A.

me (embarrassed and wanting to go): uh ... I'll... leave the menu here and...

woman: That woman is horrible, I really can't stand her. Did you see how she looked at me on my birthday?

man: unpleasant.

Me: ... I'll be back later... when you want to order .,_,.

woman: Darling, do you have another name? A nickname? Noah is nice, but I don't want to ruin my meal by calling you by that name.

me: ... *sigh* my friends call me "Nenita" 'cuz I'm the youngest of the teamwork.

woman: Ok, Nenita, I want a cofee :)

*And so the lady proceeded to criticize her cousin throughout the night*

(*Nenita is an affective way of saying "little girl" in spanish)

So fuck customers, right.

At the pub where I work, we are accepting both card and cash payments. A lot of people appreciate that they can use cash, as there a lot of places currently refusing to accept it.

So I have a table ask for their bill, I bring it over, he asks if he can pay cash. I say yes, no problem, and he gets out his wallet and jokes that "it's clean, don't worry; I washed it this morning". I laugh it off, and THEN... this guy, in a GLOBAL FUCKING PANDEMIC, gets out his cash, LICKS HIS FINGER, counts it out and hands it to me. Man I held that cash at arms length like it was a ticking bomb and downed my hands in sanitiser once it was in the till. To add to it all, I was cashing up tonight so had to touch it again when counting the till, cue a shed load more sanitiser.

Why are people gross?

ok so ........ tea... but guys, please be nice to your waiter/waitress. it’s not that hard to say please and thank you and not greet us with i’ll have a beer. everybody has bad days, i get it. but not only will you make our day by being a nice person to us, but when you later ask if you can have desert a couple minutes after the kitchen closes, we might actually help you out. 

service is hard and most of us really want your stays to be enjoyable and bust our asses for it. a little kindness goes a long way and we will appreciate it a lot. nobody means to mess up your order. nobody wants to decline your voucher if it’s expired. 

we get paid minimum wage and still do our best. just don’t yell at us please.

Two things that always bewilder me:

1. Why do people go out to eat and then rush the server if they have something to go afterwards?? Like, you could have avoided this. Literally only YOU control what time you get to the restaurant. Your unpreparedness shouldn’t have to make ME rush your shit over anyone else’s.

2. When people sit at a dirty table. And there’s always. Clean. Tables. All around that one. Why would you want a table with peoples scraps on it? If you want THAT table just say something and we’ll even bus it. Don’t sit there and make me clean the table... around you... that’s just awkward.
