Introducing 2016 Intern Julian Avenilla!
Julian graduated from Richard Montgomery High School in Rockville, MD this spring and will attend the University of Maryland Honors Program this fall.
The Godfather; it’s probably most people’s go-to favorite movie, but it’s the only movie I’ll always sit through and finish no matter when I watch it
Favorite type of cuisine?
As of now, Mediterranean food. I especially love both the delicious dipping sauces and the prevalence of lamb in their dishes.
If you could be any fictional character, who would you choose?
Ash Ketchum, the main protagonist in the Pokemon series. He’s been ten for nineteen years, and I remember the year I was ten being a very blissful time. Plus, he gets to travel the world with animals and friends. What’s there to hate about his life?
All Things Considered; their guests, analyses, and perspectives always give me new insights to consider.
What is your favorite magazine/ newspaper to read?
The Atlantic; their articles always explore a variety of issues to such a detailed degree. Few other magazine’s rival the Atlantic’s writer’s analysis and journalism expertise.
Why did you want to participate in WAMU’s Summer of Service?
WAMU 88.5 has been an omnipresent entity in my life. It’s always been on in the car and in our home. So, I wanted to learn more about the work that goes into producing and running the radio station that I’ve heard throughout my eighteen years.
What is the best aspect of working at WAMU so far?
The bluegrass that’s always playing in our cubicle. That, and the people in the building, who are all so well-read and welcoming.
What’s one thing you’ve found interesting about this year’s presidential election?
I find both the animosity traded across partisan lines and the resulting violence very interesting. I don’t understand why people have succumbed to it, and I really hope the tensions don’t escalate much further than the level at which they are now. There’s already so much discord around the world.
What is your least favorite food?
Which book do you think everyone should read?
Plato’s The Republic; it offers a provocative perspective on both society and the human condition.
If you could choose anyone, who would you pick as your mentor?
Arthur Ashe. A man born with the odds stacked against him, he became a pioneer for both African-American athletes and HIV/AIDS awareness. To me, he embodies the virtues of hard-work, courage, and compassion.
What’s one thing you wish you could change about life in the DC Metropolitan area?
The extremities in weather conditions. It can be both dry, freezing, and windy during the winter and humid, sweltering, and still during the summer. Why can’t the weather find a nice medium?
What’s the best part of waking up?
That blissful feeling of being awake but not having to get out of bed, at least until school or mom forces me out.
If you could report on any event past, present or future, what would it be?
The post-WWII baby boom. A lot of news today is either negative or short-lived when positive. The baby boom was a time of cultural change where many people all over the United States were happy.
