NATE MANN as ROSIE ROSENTHAL in Masters of the Air.
"Yeah well you oughta! You know you are officers, you are grown-ups, you oughta know!"
Began watching “The Narrow Road to the Deep North” (Amazon Prime), and wow… it may be up there w/ BoB, The Pacific, and MOTA.
I had to stop watching after E4 and take a breather. It’s brutal; heartbreaking, emotional, ruthless… everything a war series should be.
Highly recommend!
“你们的师座狂热又迷人。整个顾问团都说,他是年轻的凯撒。可我老麦说,他太爱战争了,生命对他只是战争的燃料,他该去看医生。”——亚瑟·麦克卢汉
"Your division commander is full of passion and charm. The whole advisory group is saying, that he is just like an young Caesar. But I, McLuhan, think, that he loves war too much. And lives, to him, are nothing but fodder for war. He should go and see a doctor." - Arthur McLuhan
“我的师座不是战争狂,他只是焦虑太过了,焦虑太过了,但总好过那些没心没肺的醉生梦死吧。一尘不染的事情是没有的,我们每天都在吸进灰尘,但不妨碍我们做的好一些啊,没有人经得起别人的挑剔。我们只想要一个答案,但答案不该是死啊。”——龙文章
"My division commander isn't war crazy, he's only got too much to worry about, to be anxious about, but surely, he is better than those befuddled nitwits, who are living in a daze. Indeed, nothing in life is perfect: every day, we are trudging through its ups and downs, eating dirt, biting dust. But that doesn't hinder us from doing a bit better—no one's able to endure being picked on by another. We only want an answer, but that answer shouldn't be 'death'." - Long Wenzhang
It isn't often, that I come across a character, whom I find compelling, captivating, fascinating. A character, with whom I feel a certain connection with, having me laughing with them, having me crying with them. And division commander Yu, Yu Xiaoqing, would be such a character.
He is a military man, through and through; some may even call him a perfect soldier.
A soldier, who never sits, when he can stand. “国难当头,岂能坐视。” "With our country facing imminent danger, how could one sit down and watch."
A commander, who is able to let go of personal feelings and ties, executing his own brother, who failed in his duty as a commanding officer. “前主力团团长,我胞弟慎卿,把江防管得外紧内松,自己又临阵失惊,我刚去弹压,把他砍了。” "The former head of the main regiment, my younger brother Shenqing, was superficial in his management of the river defense, over and above that, he lost his nerve in battle. I just went to suppress the situation, and I cut him down."
But at the best of times, he is only a child. A child, that dreams big. A child, that wants to do good. A child, shackled by its naivety.
His innocence shines through in his directness, his stubbornness, his every single action—and my heart aches for him.
He is a character, complex in his simplicity and simple in his complexity.
