What if against all odds, Daniel doesn't become the new Dream?

They feel Dream dying as they watch the child left in the throne room, waiting for it to happens. But it doesn't happen. The child stays child.

Instead, a mass of white drops on the ground of the throne room similarly to how dream crashed into the summoning circle, and when that mass stands up, there stands hob.

Against all odds, Hob succeeded Dream. Maybe because he was more fit for the role, maybe cause the universe realised a child had little to do in this seat, maybe cause of that moonstone Dream gifted him years ago.

No one knows. But here he is, the new Dream.

Utterly confused and unprepared, devastated of knowing what happened the moment he felt it. Because he knew without anyone telling him. He knew Dream was dead, because Dream was him and he was Dream.

All those memories of a life he hadn't lived, dating far back before he was even an idea in his parent's mind. Of a child he never had yet still knows of him, his death and of the pain that followed. Of the woman he condmned to hell for refusing him. Of a bandit drinking with friends and of the stranger dressed in black who spoke to him. He was in a bar drinking his own pity away and in a cage couting down the days. He was the one who dared and the one who left. The one he loved and the one who loved him.
