little 6 year old me is screaming at all the wasian representation recently ouuuu we’re killing it
oof just read your post about eclipse and the centering of whiteness in interracial/biracial communities and…yeah…it’s uncomfortable as hell.
i’m a mixed woman (non-white x non-white) who attended a large california high school populated mainly by wasians. and let me tell you, nearly all of my classmates were chinese/white with the asian mom/white dad dynamic.
i’ve seen all the of the baggage. the self loathing types who wished they were either fully white or fully asian. the parents who barely spoke each other’s language. the kids who were encouraged to never learn about their asian heritage, and instead, focus on being a “red blooded american.”
it was kind of tragic seeing how lost these people were, and it’s even more tragic seeing how downplayed these issues are in their communities, so they “expand the kingdom of wasia” or whatever.
the only ones who didn’t seem to give a fuck were the wasian guys that went full conservative. they made themselves the butt of race jokes and hung out solely with the white kids. typical, right?
White people are white regardless of queerness, and men are men regardless of race. I've talked about this in another post of mine where someone was asking me to discuss the phenomenon of Black men putting down Black women in fandom spaces. It's a very crucial piece of the intersectionality puzzle that we can't forget.
I feel sympathy for half-white biracial people, really I do. A fair portion of society will often see them as the "refined" or better version of their race due to their whiteness. In the case of Asian women and white men, sometimes their existence was born from fetish or maybe even a survival tactic. The best experience white biracials can have growing up is both parents being involved in their culture and upbringing, so they can have a well rounded perspective in life. Unfortunately, growing up I've seen most of the opposite (ie. their hair not being taken care of, not knowing certain languages, and worse a general disdain for the ethnic half of themselves). White people can be cruel to them, and other POC can also be cruel to them, which sucks because they can't help it.
That's still not an excuse to throw your own culture under the bus and pander to whiteness anyways. White as a race shouldn't even exist. There's a difference in someone being German/Chinese and embracing both cultures (they should!) and someone who is white/Chinese trying to embrace their "whiteness".
One such example that frustrates me is Anna Cathcart. If you're unfamiliar with the name, she plays the main protagonist of XO Kitty as...well Kitty, and when she was younger she played the daughter of one of the wicked stepsisters in Descendants, Drizzy. Anna Cathcart is Wasian, she is Chinese/Irish and was born in Canada.
Now you read the part where I said she was Chinese right...so why the hell is she playing a half Korean in XO Kitty?? What's more, is the fact that show isn't even an authentic exploration of the wasian identity, despite the fact it very well could have been. Kitty is an American girl who was raised by American folks, and gets the chance to go to her dream school in Korea, the same school her mom was able to go to. I expected a lot of scenes of her being able to follow in her mother's footsteps, reconnect with her roots in a unique way, and a thorough discussion of navigating your cultural identity while feeling like an outsider. This not only applies to biracials, but also to people who were just born in a country outside of where their family is from.
But no. Instead it's a koreaboo fantasy that white girls can insert themselves into, and the main actress isn't even Korean !!!
Ugh, I tire of this.
Alert: A living human emerged from my body an hour ago. We are calling her Luna, a name chosen by her oldest sister, inspired by a character in My Little Pony. Like her middle sister, she entered the world in Gangnam, the district famed for its eponymous K-pop song. She's 8lbs, 6oz and 21 inches long and ravenously hungry (shocker). As ever, I am dazzled by the magic of new life, and the intense privilege of being someone’s mom. Hu-Stiles, party of five! #girls #squad #alltheladies #wasians (at Seoul Seocho-dong (서초동))
