OVERVIEW & SIGNIFICANCE: "Choosing the Hydrogen Atom Reflects His Respect for and His Obsession with Creation to Some Extent:

Hydrogen is the most significant and abundant element in the universe, known for the creation of water and the existence of stars. Moreover, it is the first element from which most other elements were created. Its fusion into Helium is the source of the sun’s energy, representing endless energy. Dr. Manhattan was obsessed with the thought of creation and Hydrogen, though the simplest element, if combined with other substances leads to the creation of new substances like water, stars, petroleum fuels, among others. Being present in all-stars had a parallel with Dr. Manhattan being god-like and heading out to create life in the end. So it was why Hydrogen was an element that kindled his respect, so he painlessly burnt the mark onto his forehead."

Apart from being a piece of apocalyptic fiction and an investigation of a parallel world, The Watchmen is also a murder story and a detective story. Right from the first issue you have this obsessive, paranoid, psychotic detective working through a doomed America trying to find somebody who’s killed the Comedian.
