Description
The subject is a kind of hymn to creation, the source for which has been identified as the Psalms. The painting depicts creation, desired by God, who is portrayed as an old man with a beard, holding a book inscribed with the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet, the alpha and the omega, in a reference to Eternity, the ‘beginning’ and ‘end’ of all things.

Description
St Edmunds Church, located near the old Exe Bridge, was first constructed in 870. It is also believed that Exeter’s first printing press was installed in the church in the 1500’s. With the re-development of Exeter’s Exe bridge area, the church was partly demolished, but the excavation of the old Exe Bridge led to the stabilization of the Church tower, which still remains today.

Hagar and the angel is a biblical narrative from Genesis where an angel finds Hagar, Abraham's pregnant Egyptian servant, in the wilderness after she flees from Sarah's abuse. The angel tells her to return, promising numerous descendants and naming her son Ishmael ("God hears"). She calls God El Roi ("God who sees me").
