The question was: what would you make of an artwork that was completely resistant to interpretation? And it got me thinking. There's no way that anything could ever possibly be resistant to interpretation, not completely... so long as it exists to be pondered, you can ponder it. The only way there could ever be anything that means nothing to absolutely everyone is if it didn't exist, but even that means something... I mean, "nothing" in itself is a concept, isn't it? And people often miss things they've never had - unborn babies, falling in love, and things like that. They're things that mean something to people, something that they can comprehend and develop ideas about, and interpret, even though they don't exist. But that's not art anyway, even though the process of thinking and thought is beautiful and artful in itself.
Suppose, for argument's sake, there was something which was totally resistant to interpretation... well, you'd have to come to the conclusion that it is so. And that would give it meaning: the meaning would be that there is no meaning. And you can apply that to life.
It got me thinking. (This is essentially my thoughts on Nihilism, though I'm incredibly under read in that department.) Nothing means anything at all, except what it means to people. That doesn't matter to anybody except those it effects, and it only effects them because they decided it would, or because they were naturally disposed to care, or whatever, but the point is: we create our own meaning. It's just interesting to think how nothing would have value if we didn't give it value. Nothing would matter if we hadn't decided that it should.
My view is that that's sort of irrelevant, even if it is true. Things still matter to you, if you're a human, you like things, love things, have feelings, thoughts and volitions of or pertaining to particular things. So the fact (if it is a fact, I'm not saying I'm right) that nothing actually fundamentally matters, doesn't change anything at all. And I find that amazing too. How can such a big, amazing, seemingly life altering concept be so insignificant and nothing?
Anyway, that's my deepness for the day. I hope you enjoy reading. Let me know what you think, or how you're going or anything, I'm rather lonely... lonely enough to have started playing Farmville 2 so wow, please, dear lovely people, take pity and let us chat.
