I just reblogged something and evoked how we had more than a century of fiction warning us about the dangers of letting machines run our lives, only for people to keep thinking letting machines run our lives is a good idea... And it reminded me of how I noticed something fascinating in the fantasy genre.
All fantasy books (at least they used to) have this very "ecological" side to them. Because, from Tolkien to The Wheel of Time, passing by the Fionavar Tapestry, Memory Sorrow & Thorn and others, all these high fantasy books follow a same specific trope: the Big Bad/Evil Sorcerer/Demonic Overlord/Satan-by-another-name... Manifests and/or attacks by messing up with the weather, the seasons and the environment.
The most common manifestation of this topic is the "fire/ice dichotomy". It is something inherited from Tolkien, who had Morgoth be the lord of fire and ice, and use both to destroy the world ; but all these pieces of fiction tend to present the manifestations of evil through seasons becoming unnatural. Winters that last well into spring and summer ; or on the contrary abnormal droughts and wildfires caused by a summer that never ends... And this is exactly what we are currently living, and what scientists have been warning us, and what humanity has done to the climate. And all these books, not just the recent 90s ones, but as early as the 70s and 60s, were already taking in consideration these problems and understood the full scope, and wrote stories that are eerily echoing what we are living through today.
I was especially shocked by reading the Fionavar Tapestry because (small spoilers): the first book is about the return of the evil lord causing an abnormaly harsh and long summer that causes massive drought and almost a famine ; by the second book his underling goes on to perform the reverse by making winter last all the way into summer ; and then, hopefully they are stopped, but they still had begun creating a literal acid rain/poison rain to kill people (pollution anybody?). And in France right now, after several years of much-too hot summers that caused deadly heatwaves, and last year's summer which didn't have heatwaves but DID cause a drought because water was at an all-time low to the point we are still fearing for what is going to happen by the next years ; and today the summer is notoriously much too mild if not cold for a summer, with a record of cloudy days and rains for a summer (and our spring was the most humid and rainy we had in a very long time - people still today are saying that, despite summer just beginning, we have an autumnal weather)...
Let's just say reading the Fionavar books right as this is happening around me is quite disturbing
