Maybe it’s just that good...
I just want a bit more time loving Our Flag Means Death and obsessing over it happily for all the great content it has given us before I start worrying whether it will end badly.
Like obviously, we’ve all been hurt before. I get the anxiety that comes with something feeling ‘too good to be true’. This show could have been a one season happy one shot about silly pirates falling in love, and I would have loved it. However, I love it more for what it actually is.
It’s a show that was inclusive and conscious of representation from the beginning, a show where the punchline isn’t someone’s sexuality or identity. It’s a comedy, but it has real emotional depth and complexity against a fantastically silly mundane look at piracy. Sure, in real life this all ends badly, and as viewers who’ve scoured the planet for morsels of good LGBTQ+ content, we’ve seen countless bad endings for our love stories.
But, this show hasn’t given me a reason not to trust it. This show said THIS IS HAPPENING. It gave us an interesting and complicated arc for these characters that perfectly sets up the possibility for more hijinks and an epic reunion. This show said We’re going to tell this story right, and we’re going to trust that the audience will want more because they’ve literally been starving for this for so long.
So, I’m not worried. This show didn’t queerbait us. It said Jim is They/Them and God is She/her and Murder is a natural cause and cake can still not taste of orange even if you use 50 of those fuckers. It said love is not ownership, we talk it through as a crew, and I AM THE KRAKEN.
This show is as close to what I’ve always wanted as I’ve ever seen, so all I can really ask for is more of it with more women and more fashion and more love.
