Week 101 Victory
Selected Works by SATR. 2017-2018.
At the young age of 22, SATR is one of the world’s most fascinating graffiti artists. The rising star from Guangzhou, China made a breakthrough in the contemporary post-urban art movement with her depictions of ferocious animals using her signature red, white, black and grey palette and her vigorous and exquisite brush strokes. She has stayed true to her art style and subjects since starting to paint murals in 2013. Recognized and praised worldwide, SATR has also worked with canvas and ink, and collaborated for brands such as Nike and Vans. She is currently making her North American debut with her exhibit, Animals Told Me, featuring her works with canvas and ink.

She/I -- the dreamer -- cannot act as a principal in her own dream. She, the narrator of the table, is an easy accomplice. She sits quietly on the sidelines at the dance, waiting to be invited. The watcher has a bitter place in the world. She has so much yearning in her heart, so little acumen. Her loneliness is unbearable. Her unrequited longing calcified into her ventricles. Her silence welling up in her throat, all she can do now is gasp or sing for blood. She must quench her thirst for revenge. She must sound the sirens. She must rage out for being the obedient one, for being the repressed singer, for being that perfect Chinese girlhood too timorous to break the mold.
Revenge of the Mooncake Vixen by Marilyn Chin. 2009.
Revenge of the Mooncake Vixen is the roaring debut of Chinese American author, Marilyn Chin. This coming of age tale tells the story of twin sisters, Moonie and Mei Ling Wong, known as the “double happiness” Chinese food delivery girls. While under the care of their dominant grandmother from Hong Kong, they deliver Americanized Chinese food from their family restaurant every day throughout southern California. While the rebellious, wild, and often raging Wong sisters boldly assert their sexuality and intellect, they are often caught in promiscuous advances and struggle with the influence and expectations of their Chinese heritage while chasing the American dream.
Often referencing Chinese myths and tales and delivered with Chin’s strong, bold prose mixed with satire, profanity and metaphorical lyric, her debut novel is a raw depiction of the generational relationships and the growing pains of Chinese American women. Chin’s Revenge of the Mooncake Vixen is a shocking, gritty and whimsical account of the Chinese immigrant experience in America.

Everything We Create is Ourselves by He Xiangyu. 2013. Created as part of the Palate Project, 2011-2016.
He Xiangyu is a prominent Chinese contemporary artist based in Berlin and Beijing. Belonging to a generation who grew up during a period of rapid urbanisation in China, He is best known for exploring pertinent social, political and cultural themes with his experimental approach to art production.
One of He’s longest projects thus far - the execution of which his practice is centred upon - Palate Project spans six years between 2011 and 2016. It is represented by multiple works, including the installation piece Everything We Create is Ourselves. Palate Project explores from a “synaesthetic dimension”, displaying He’s use of a range of materials to delineate cognitive experience in visual form. True to the project’s name, Everything We Create is Ourselves employs the use of a set of bronze sculptures that reproduce the sensation of using one’s tongue to touch the roof of the mouth. Throughout Palate Project, He directs his focus towards the privileging of individual experience, in contrast to previous large-scale, depersonalised undertakings.
