An Apology to Chrisette from all of US. ( The Black Community)
If a black singer walked into a room full of predominantly white men, knowing she wasn't truly welcomed. In a Jean Michel Basquiat dress displaying black bodies being hung, and people being brutalized. Then sang a whole NEGRO SPIRITUAL.. Black choir in all black included. Walked around that room after talking about the troubles of the black community, again, in a room where nobody actually cared. Do you think this would be a good form of protest?..
If you didn't say yes, keep reading so I can tell you how you failed this test, and Chrisette Michelle. And how your failing Jay Z more than likely.
In a world of R. Kelly sympathizers, Michael Jackson conspiracy theorist, and #BlackGirlMagic… we failed Queen Chrisette. YES.. you did. AND NO, it wasn't her fault we as a black community failed HER. The worst part of it all..? We are failing at supporting someone again. In a Basquiat dress that would have made anyone feel “black girl magic”, she stepped into a room filled with everyone but US. Yet we are the ones not letting her into rooms, and looking sideways when she walks in. Even though she was there for US, yes.. For your black a** too.
Once upon a time there was a Grammy Award Winning, chart topping Queen who was making her way. Blazing a trail some would even say, leaving a path for other neo-soul artists such as Ella Mai and the likes. She was a regular at every black event, and there was not a SINGLE tribute she wasn't involved in. Whether it was a Gospel or soul singer… you expected to hear her angelic yet soulful voice. So when she again decided to use her voice for the benefit of POC, in her mind she was making a good decision. We all know what she did..but we all don't understand why. I've heard many conspiracy theories as to what could have made her take such a job. Especially with the state of the U.S at the time. I believe She was quoted to say something along the lines of “If none of us are in the room, who is there to speak for us?”
In my mind.. She needed to say nothing more.
Kind of like when JayZ recently was quoted to saying something along the lines of “ We have moved past kneeling”. We could kneel until our knees bleed!!!!... but until one of us walks into the room with that Basquiat dress on.. Or NY fitted. None of it matters.. And if no one has ever told you QUEEN Chrisette.. IM SORRY. WE FAILED YOU.
