The garden in late May
While looking for a suitable “plant of the week” I was surprised that there were so many things just beginning to come into their own.
The variegated Weigelia is always spectacular, having long sprays of flowers. it gets cut back hard every year after flowering. Unfortunately I don’t know the variety as it was here when we arrived over thirty years ago.
Varieties of perennial wallflowers are out, as are the earliest alliums. These have spread and, I fear, may become too dominant in time. Anthriscus “Ravens Wing”, the dark form of the native cow parsley is similarly prone to spreading but it is easily recognised as a seedling so can be moved or potted on. It rises majestically on dark stems to a height of about 1.2m.
We have the blue Camassias and the white ones, which come out later. This year, the blue ones seemed a bit washed-out, while the white, although more cream in colour, stand better.
The weather is still chilly, well below last year’s high temperatures, so everything is two to three weeks behind. And the wet weather has brought the slugs out with a vengeance. On the allotment, three out of four squash plants have disappeared due to slug damage. Hey Ho!
