Holy shit guys, my respect for Kurzgesagt has just taken a MASSIVE fucking nosedive.

They published a video called, "why we should give ozempic to everyone" and in the current climate of weight discrimination and life-saving drug shortages, how could you possibly justify giving a medication that has dangerous side effects to people who don't need it???

I know someone who had cyclic vomiting syndrome for YEARS because it turns out, his digestive system doesn't work properly; Everything he eats he usually throws back up because food just sits in his stomach for days without being digested until it rots. The medication he takes to speed up his digestion and effectively allow him to stop fucking starving is in a shortage right now because people also take that medication for weight loss, which evidence has consistently shown is a losing game anyway.

My friend could starve to death because of anti-fat bias.

Do NOT suggest to me that any medication is right for EVERYONE. The way to fix the so-called "obesity" epidemic is by making healthcare and nutrition more accessible and giving up this pointless need to bully people just for being fat, which we KNOW leads directly to disordered eating behavior. People are dying because of anti-fat bias and all you people can do is split hairs over what's "healthy" so you can find people it's acceptable to bully. Fuck off. Just admit that you're fucking assholes who don't give a shit about health, because that's plainly obvious to everyone who isn't you.

So you definitely don't want to read the comments on this one, but there's a new study out showing just how bad weight discrimination in the work force can be.

I like how they examine how the impact intersects with class and gender (just men and women, with 23000 ppl in their sample, I'm 100% sure there were trans ppl, unless they were deliberately excluded)

These results suggest that the aggregate costs of wage discrimination borne by overweight workers in America are hefty. Suppose you assume that obese women, but not men, face a wage penalty of 7% (the average across all such women in our sample) and that this is the same regardless of their level of education. Then a back-of-the-envelope calculation suggests that they bear a total cost of some $30bn a year. But if you account for both the discrimination faced by men, and for the higher wage penalty experienced by the more educated (who also tend to earn more), the total cost to this enlarged group more than doubles, to $70bn per year.

Skinny people (not average, actually skinny) do face hardships especially medically when doctors decide we're too skinny to receive proper treatment, or blaming our (even serious) issues on "go eat" even when we do eat alot.

But you gotta understand fat people have significantly fewer privileges than skinny people, especially socially, ESPECIALLY outside of Tumblr.

The current total active community on here may not even be a million, and that isn't enough to declare social privilege for fat people. (This is directed to the weirdos that have a problem with people preferring/boosting/repping fatness on here)

Medically, fat people suffer even more. While fat can make existing problems worse for you (same for skinny), doctors are more likely to believe ALL a person's problems is because of fatness, than they do for skinny. Also, medical equipment and services just aren't designed for people who exceed size (this also happens for super tall people btw, and adults too short/small for things like even a stretcher or medical transport chair to contain them properly. That's me btw 😭) this medical problem is because they don't design things with different size in mind. Everything is "one size fits a small demographic" and that's bad.

Fatphobia is a much larger problem than what skinny people face.

This does not mean we should avoid the problems skinny people face, because weight discrimination kills us too.

In general weight discrimination needs to stop BOTH directions.

We focus on fat people because it's a worse problem.

I just want to say I'm so glad i found your tumblr. I used to follow a couple fat acceptance tumblrs that just don't really post anymore, and was missing that in my life. I've been liking your posts all day. I know some ppl don't like that, but i hope you don't mind. I want to share it all with folks.

A question came to me while browsing. I'm going to need knee replacement surgery, but the ortho said they won't do surgery of you're over a certain bmi (in America, on medicaid). I don't know if that's just this particular surgeon, or if medicaid won't approve it because of my weight. Maybe a follower of yours might have some experience with navigating weight discriminating with medicaid?

It's likely the surgeon. Medicare and Medicaid do cover knee replacements, and so far I haven't been able to find anything that says the insurance has a BMI cutoff. Most surgeons won't operate on patients with a BMI over 35-40 because of "surgical complications, risk of infection and poor outcomes." (And, of course, a new University of Alberta study shows that losing weight before knee replacement surgery doesn’t lead to better outcomes for patients.) But I would still have a conversation with your doctor/surgeon to make sure that Medicaid does cover it. If anyone reading this has any relevant information to share, or resources on finding arthroplasty surgeons without BMI limits, please let me know!

I'm so sorry you're dealing with such a detrimental facet of weight discrimination, @enbycarp. It breaks my heart. You deserve treatment in the body that you're in TODAY.
