In the wall of this lane in Stromness, Orkney, the Meconopsis cambrica (welsh poppy) is flowering. This species has yellow or orange flowers and will happily grow in the sun or shade. It will self-seed in the spaces in paths, walls and between plants in a woodland border.

Papaver cambricum (Welsh Poppy) both common colours #oneadayplant One for all my Welsh friends out there. I feel this plant better represents Wales than a Leek does. (Just my opinion) One of my favourite late spring plants. I’m drawn particularly to the overall elegance of the plant, the purity of yellow and orange saturation and the crinkles petals on the flowers. Seeds freely, but rarely rampantly. It is a welcome free visitor to any garden that I have encountered it in. I may have even spread seed from my gardens into those of willing friends in the past. A wonderful self-seeder between other plants is Meconopsis cambrica (Welsh poppy) with bright yellow flowers and Meconopsis cambrica var. aurantiaca providing a splash of orange. This biennial or short-lived perennial has a tap-root with light green, pinnately lobed leaves. They are easy to grow in situ from seed sprinkled on the soil.

Many years ago a friend gave me seeds of an orange flowered Meconopsis cambrica (Welsh poppy) and it has travelled with me to each of my gardens. This short-lived perennial grows happily alongside the yellow flowered form in the sun or shade, and self-seeds into paths, borders and containers.
