What's wild about the Contrapoints statement is, this isnt the position of the Ive Had it Podcast. This isnt the position of the Pod Save America boys. She's being more right-wing on this topic than (admittedly progressive) liberals. More than people that worked directly with Obama and Biden. The Pod Save guys were literally cririsising Biden about Gaza pre election.

I always thought the "she's a lib" take to be a bit overblown but in the end I think that might have been underselling it. I will say, this is the final form of the "erm tactics and optics" posting for the online American left and the years we wasted with the online creators so focused on that dominating the discourse can finally be put to bed.

So, I’ve seen this post (👇🏻) or variations thereof floating around Instagram today. I have some stuff to say.

Gaza called for a strike? Who? Which specific person from Gaza asked for this? None of the posts have said who did it, just “Gaza”. As a whole. Okay. That definitely doesn’t raise questions.

So, one day of striking from everything. The posts I saw said it was “strike until the genocide is over”, but I highly doubt that goal will be achieved in one day of not buying shit or going to work. So is it a day of striking, or striking/abstaining until Israel stops the war/existing? Mixed message. Furthermore, how does one day of not doing stuff help? That’s not an organised strike or boycott. Remember that one day Don’t Do Shit strike a couple of months ago? Remember how it completely changed the world? Yeah, me neither. The strike was also apparently called with about 24 hours notice.

Finally, the last slide. A key part of this general one day strike is for you, YES you, to like their post, leave a comment, and send it to at least three friends. Not to, say, write to companies explaining why you won’t be buying from them for One Whole Day. Or send a letter to your school saying why you won’t turn up. Or write to your MP.

You know what those three commands sound like? A really good way for their account and post to get boosted by the algorithm. That level of engagement on a post is the shit Meta eats with a spoon.

The realistic answer to this is that it’s a cynical publicity stunt, hijacking a genuine tragedy to gain followers and social capital.

I do wonder, though… (this will make me sound like a conspiracy theorist)… There was a large scale mobilisation called for from one of the refugee camps in Gaza, against Hamas. I can’t remember exactly which camp or who by, but the information is definitely on Jumblr somewhere.

I have a feeling that if a bogus general strike is called for, it’ll take up most of the attention of the western leftists tomorrow, and keep them looking away from what actual Gazans have to say.
