WGNS 2
The Properties of Cat’s Eye shells
As with all eye-shaped things, this shell is an excellent choice to keep curses from targeting you. Because of it’s naturally protective nature, it could plausibly be used in warding, to “close” the home against predators, or perhaps to seal in something water-related. Due to its use as a perfumery fixative, this shell could also feasibly work to slow the fading (evaporation) of, and increase the longevity of, something water-related, or lend an animalistic note to the spell or working.
Things I might use Cat’s Eye shells for:
Witch-warding jewelry
Circles or home wards, to keep a predator out or deflect curses/scrying
Circles or wards, to seal in wisdom or intuition
Spells or wards, to increase the longevity and potency of wisdom or intuition
Spells or circles, to evoke a sense of animalism
Things Cat’s Eye shells could theoretically be used for:
Reflecting curses back to the sender
Chaining an opponent that could be considered a predator of some kind
Enhancing the strength and duration of psychic visions
Blocking or chaining psychic powers
Calling on animal spirits or animal-related gods
Notes:
In the first episode of season 1, Sam notes that their father’s room is protected by both salt and Cat’s Eye shells. Since the shells primary function is to prevent the desiccation of the snail, and salt is quite good at desiccating things, this is an interesting combination. Because the shells would not have been powdered (Sam wouldn’t have been able to recognize them if they had been), I would assume they were in use to perhaps defend against the “predatory” spirit of the episode, and/or to weaken her psychic powers. The salt would probably have acted doubly as a ward against spirits in general, and as an amplification of the shells’ spirit-weakening properties.
WGNS 1
The Properties of Salt
Salt is one of the most ancient and venerated substances in history. It is essential for the function of animal bodies, yet too much can cause illness; thus, it could easily be used in either a blessing or a curse. In the past is was a valuable substance and sometimes even a currency, valued at its weight in gold, so you could use it in place of gold or in prosperity spells. Many cultures and religions used it in offerings to their gods or the dead, and a great many still do. Many cultures use salt to keep away evil spirits, or spirits in general, and to draw in prosperity. In Alchemy, salt refers to physical matter, through which personality and life force are expressed.
Things I might use salt for:
Spells concerning muscles and hydration
Spells to enhance the sense of taste
Curses concerning the heart, blood, or kidneys
Curses for draught, desiccation, or famine
Wards against weakness, dehydration, or famine
Spells to bring prosperity
Offerings to gods
Wards to keep out spirits
Spells to purify energy
Spells to enhance the strength and resilience of the body
Things salt could theoretically be used for:
Balancing an “impure” material in a spell
Spells to weaken spirits
Line curses (via family blood)
Instead of gold in a spell or ritual
Spells or wards concerning water/earth

In the first episode of season 1, Sam notes that their father’s room is protected by both salt and Cat’s Eye shells. The Winchester Guide to the Natural Supernatural
WGNS (wiggins) for short
My name is Dean and I am a Supernatural fictive. Hi, Dean. Yeah, this isn’t an AA meeting. Anyways.
When I was a kid, I was kinda thrown in the deep end on how to deal with the real-world creepy-darkness-monsters out there. If you’re anything like me, you might have some problems with ‘em too. Now, hopefully the main thing we have in common is Supernatural, so what I’m gonna do is this; for every episode of SPN, starting from the very beginning, I’ll watch it and make a list of every monster and magical thing shown or mentioned. Then, I’ll do my research (or find my old research) and supply you with the quick-and-dirty on real-world application. If I miss something, feel free to hit me up with an ask about it, but keep in mind SPN kinda frontloads their episodes with backstory. There’s a lot of shit to cover and I can’t do it all at once. If you think I missed something, it’s like 50/50 I’m just covering it later.
I’m gonna start with a disclaimer; I’ll be writing this from the perspective of a former hunter. If you’re a fictive of a Supernatural angel, demon, or other being, my guide might not be very useful to you; it may even be insulting.
My process: Basically, I do a shit ton of research from every angle I can find, then summarize it based on my own experience with how Magic™ works. I won’t include the research portion because I could write-- and have written --literal essays on those topics; I’ll only give you the important stuff. However, if you wanna know the research trail for a topic, just ask and I’ll give you a list of things to google; I find research is more informative if you do the digging yourself.
Please note, I will not be covering how to break the law. Now, if the police are being assholes to you, yeah, I might cover how to survive that. And I might go over what exactly is considered breaking the law. But I ain’t gonna give you any tips or tricks on how to get your ass in trouble in the first place.
