I've been lucky enough to read two @huntleyfitzpatrick books so far and add #whatithoughtwastrue to my physical collection. Although I mostly read contemporary stories because of how light hearted and romantic they tend to be, I read Huntley's books because of the life she breathes into her characters and the way she writes about economic inequality. While other books usually end with the poor character getting a job that pays better or marrying someone rich and making poverty seem temporary and easy to overcome, Huntley shows its readers that it is something rarely overcome by just one generation and it molds us. She makes her readers understand how anxiety inducing and stressful and health debilitating it is to know you are one disaster way from homelessness or repossession or massive debt. And young age doesn't exempt you of any of that since you can see how many opportunities you don't have, how separate you are from others your age, how it takes away literal years from you and the people you love compared to those that never have to struggle to put food on the table.
