An incomplete, unrehearsed, and unhinged recap of JR Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood series
When we look back at the early 2000s vampire craze, one book obliterated all the others in terms of success and cultural influence. But almost a full month before "Twilight" hit the shelves, “Dark Lover” introduced us to the Black Dagger Brotherhood. We are getting an adaptation twenty years and more than 40 books later.
Now, full disclosure: According to my Goodreads, I am not up to date with anything published after “Lover Arisen” and “A Warm Heart in Winter,” but that also means that I read more than 30 books in this series, and I have been part of the fandom for more than half my life.
These books are one of my Roman empires, so if you are a BDB fan or just want to be given an admittedly shallow but hopefully entertaining dive, take a seat, babe. I’m about to have so much fun, and I hope you do too.
I have never met anyone who reads these books in real life, yet they are always at the top of the bestselling list, Ward’s conventions are always full, and the series has been going long enough that vampires are cool again.
I refuse to Google the author. Here is what I think you should know about this woman: she looks like she came from money, married into money, and will die with money. Why does that matter? Because she is talented, that is newsworthy!
Ward’s writing style is one of the most unique I have ever come across. The only thing that dates her books is the technology and pop culture references, because everything else? Immaculate. Her female characters are more than love interests, her male characters feel complex emotions other than anger, her villains are terrifying not because they are monsters but because you know and see them on the news every day and the problems that these characters come across and have to fight against are your own. Yes, these are vampire romances, and they are still easier to relate to than 95% of the books I have ever read.
Disabilities, addiction, sexual orientation, classicism, discrimination, misogyny, poverty, grief, and all kinds of trauma… are all big parts of a lot of the characters’ lives not to differentiate one from the other or offer a man an opportunity to be a woman’s saviour, but because they are things that the characters survived and still have to deal with every day, even after they meet the love of their lives, get married and have children.
Ward is not a Mormon, fyi, the spice is unbelievable, and she can have your heart pumping at the grittiest fighting scene, to smiling at the friendship displays, to laughing out loud at the dialogue, to sobbing at a loss and jumping in bed and kicking your feet at the love declarations.
In this universe, vampirism is not a decease or a supernatural occurrence but an evolutionary branch of homo sapiens going back thousands of years. In their own theology, vampires were created by The Scribe Virgin (surely a capitalist goddess since other people do all the writing for her), not a girl’s girl, since she loves keeping women imprisoned and a liar too. How are you a goddess and create and uphold a patriarchal system that deletes women! You are going to learn to hate this, pick me, B. Her younger brother (the Omega) is even worse. Unable to create a species from scratch, he simply used humans as the raw material to create Lessers, the evil guys that are trying to hunt vampires to extinction and doing an amazing job at that.
To fight against this new enemy, the vampires created the Black Dagger Brotherhood, whose aim was to protect the species from their sworn enemies and serve as the Royal Family’s private bodyguards. The product of centuries of selective breeding and rigorous training left Darius, Tohr(ment), Wrath, Rhage, Z(sadist), V(ishous) and Phury an almost separate species inside their own, able to do and withstand things that even normal vampires couldn’t.
Ward’s vampires can easily live up to 1000 years and only noticeably age in the last hundred, they’re stronger, the males possess a biological instinct to help them select a mate that they can scent mark to warn other males not to get close to, they can read thoughts depending on their own ability and the other person’s mental strength with a lucky few even having special abilities, they have incredibly sharp senses, they heal fast, they can materialize if they know the place where they are going to and up until they are 25 they can tolerate sunlight and don’t need to drink blood.
The biggest difference between species is that vampire maturity happens in a matter of a few hours around their 25th birthday, and many don’t survive. After their transition, they need to feed from the opposite sex every few months or more often if they are sick or hurt. The only thing more dangerous to a vampire than their transition into adulthood is pregnancy and childbirth. Couple that with females only being fertile once every ten years and their pregnancies lasting a year and a half, human and Lesser persecution and a centuries-old monarchic crisis … these vamps are going through a lot, and there aren’t that many of them left.
Ward built this world brick by brick by creating a culture, festivities, traditions, subcultures and generational differences and was incredibly smart to base these costumes in the vampire’s unique biology and history, so every little choice made sense, and she adds to it with every character’s viewpoint and experience. Hardcore fans will know that there are a few continuity errors, mostly amongst smaller characters and details, but those are mere details in this amazing tapestry.
I love romance, but sometimes, and I think we all know it, the world building can be as flimsy as the hero’s shirt, being blown apart by the strong wind, letting us look into his eight pack.
Or if you are Gen Z or younger, those cartoon covers that are making people panic about teens finding corn!!! You know, the vintage kind that you have to buy and read hidden away, rather than just opening Instagram. These books are the real deal, and I hope we get the adaptation they deserve. And who should we start with if not with the King himself?
BREAKING: Hollywood superstar Alan Ritchson of "Reacher" fame verbally throat-punches MAGA former Congressman Matt Gaetz who he went to school with: "That motherf*cker. We are adversaries."
And the acting powerhouse was just getting started...
"It’s shocking to me that the panhandle of Florida continues to vote for somebody—knowing everything we know about him and the promises that he’s made behind closed doors about pardoning certain criminals—he’s just not a good dude!" Ritchson said to GQ.
Gaetz has been credibly accused of sex trafficking minors in the past and for a brief period of time was considered for Donald Trump's Attorney General position.
"There’s part of me that wants to get into politics to outdo somebody like him for good, and there’s part of me that’s like, I’m not duplicitous enough to succeed in politics," Ritchson continued.
"There are certain people that do a good job of staying true to who they are, but they’re ineffective. I think Bernie Sanders is a hero. But it’s like, what has he accomplished?" he added.
The actor has taken direct aim at Donald Trump in the past.
"Trump is a rapist and a con man, and yet the entire Christian church seems to be treat him like he’s their poster child and it’s unreal. I don’t understand it," Ritchson, who is a devout Christian, told The Hollywood Reporter.
"Christians today have become the most vitriolic tribe. It is so antithetical to what Jesus was calling us to be and to do," he said.
In the same interview, Ritchson tore into the police officers who killed the innocent Black woman Breonna Taylor during a raid. "That was a tragic case," he said.
"Cops get away with murder all the time, and the fact that we can’t really hold them accountable for their improprieties is disturbing to me," he added. "I mean, you shouldn’t have to spend more time getting an education as a hairstylist than as a cop who’s armed with a deadly weapon."
In his new interview with GQ, Ritchson also had words for the super-religious people who criticize his acting choices.
"People have this weird relationship with fictional characters, and sort of equate that to the real human being," he said. "I don’t have that problem, making that distinction. I get criticized a lot by Christians who are like, ‘How dare you have an unmarried sex scene on TV and then talk about Jesus?’ I’m sorry—I doubt that’s going to be part of the conversation when I’m standing at the pearly gates!"
Ritchson should be commended for his bold words. With MAGA in the White House it would easier than ever for him to stick his head in the sand and focus solely on making money and hit TV shows.
Instead, he's bravely speaking the truth.
Please like and share!
fandoms with female main characters are always a double edged sword because even the diehard fans of the main couple treat the girl like a stepchild they never wanted.

30 Palestinians were killed in Gaza just since the ceasefire announcement less than 10 hours ago.
Think how depraved, sadistic, and arrogant an entity is to openly use the time between it had agreed to a ceasefire and it going into effect as a final stretch in a race of annihilation, a final show to the whole world of the stark asymmetry of power between the occupier and the occupied.
lots to unpack from Luigi Mangione’s letterboxd reviews ❤️
I find it incredibly funny that people saw a guy who shot someone (even an extremely killable person) and then expected him to have a socially acceptable morality system and view of the world.
Like folks I hate to say it but typically to be at a point in your life where you are willing ready and able to go shoot someone (even someone who absolutely fucking deserves it), you are not going to have a system of morality that appeals to the vast majority of people
Anyways in conclusion if you were supporting him before, keep supporting him, fuck the ceos, don't allow your culture politics to get in the way
This is a class issue let's keep it one
starbucks AND mcdonalds?? girl no the boycott. today's lesson is if he'd followed the boycott he wouldn't have even been caught
“‘I wish it need not have happened in my time,’ said Frodo. ‘So do I,’ said Gandalf, ‘and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.’”

How are the Watcher guys going to make an apology video and not address
1. Steven supports a bigoted Evangelical church and admitted on a past podcast that he’s okay with being friends with bigots. Literally silence on this and they need to address it!
2. And they’re not using their own streaming platform like they said, they’re using Vimeo. Which is why people are having trouble password sharing since it limits multiple devices.
Idk I’m having a hard time going back to supporting them when they’re still hiding stuff despite the apology. I also don’t want to support a guy who goes to an Evangelist church.
Idk not to sound like a whingey bitch, but the current watcher situation is reminding me of how people just Expect underprivileged people to take exclusion with grace. This happens with disability as well. Whenever something isn't accessible, people crack down on disabled people who express disappointment or pitch a fit because "oh well, not everything is capable of being accessible, stop ruining our fun!" Similarly, the stupid fucking Watcher streaming service is only For fans who can afford 6 dollars a month. Most of us can't, but we're expected to bow out with grace because... we don't have the privilege to be here anymore??
"Oh, you're all 'artists deserve to be paid for their work' until they actually ask for money!" I cannot give them 6 dollars a month for 4 fucking youtube videos. It's not reflective of myself or my moral standing that I can't fucking afford that. They have been funded through other means so far. It's not like they were getting Nothing just because I wasn't paying out of my own pocket.
It's frustrating because in most cases, including people would be easy. Watcher's content used to be free and funded through various means. Just add characters of color to your line-up. Just add more body types to your pictures. Fucking add image descriptions to your fucking posts already. I'm sick of people punishing marginalized people for not taking "hardship" with a smile when we're fucking excluded all the time for no fucking reason.
