I think this has been said before but, yk the idea of 'living is the best' in tcf? And Cale, being the most staunch believer in it, despite his actions being so contradictory?
The thing is, i do agree that the man believes it completely. But like, you have to wonder if he ever doubted that statement considering his lifestyle. Honestly, who would ever consider living alone in a post apocalyptic world with everyone you ever loved dead the 'best'?
But like, what if he actually did?
What if that really was the reason he clung to living, the reason he went to work day after day?
Because then it would all make sense. He lived because he perceived it was the best, and not because it actually was. Especially after the soos incident? That was the time his ideals were probably shaken to the core, because—what sort of living could be so harrowing? What was so good about it?
But i think at that point the reasoning didn't matter. Living was the best—living had to be the best—so he had to live on. If he ever considered anything else, his mind would've collpased—and that's a mild reaction, considering what he's been through. I like to think that his self-sacrificial tendencies were an outlet to that, like a way to die that wasn't actively killing himself. A way to not deny the belief of the dead man he had admired the most.
A way to say 'living is the best, but dying isn't so bad either'.
But i also think, at some point, he came to believe the statement wholeheartedly. Especially after things settled in his new world, with his family, with even the soos returning—maybe at some point, he did exclaim to himself, Ah, living really is the best, and actually meant it, unlike usual.
