What choices did they end up making/do you have a story in your head about their motivations or their backstory or anything?

They're close to Tabitha, they saved Gretchen (sorry Duke), and went back for the kids. They invited Tabitha to the ghost hunting, and Tabitha gave up years of her life because they were going to do it otherwise.
As far as backstory goes- they weren't close with their mom but not in... A bad way? Vivian just wasn't very motherly, in that once Max could handle themself, they were kinda expected to. Vivian died of lung cancer, which the irony of was not lost on her, and her mental health declined along with the rest of her. She lashed out a lot, but Max holds no ill will towards her.
Due to their talk to animals trait, they really kind of put animal logic onto people. So they struggle to see people as being intentionally cruel, so they don't think the worst of others.
They find all that's going on to be mildly exciting, observing the horrors of the world. I think they've dealt with a lot of tragedy throughout their life so this isn't that much of a shock to them.
