Theoretically there should be twenty four Paperwhites blooming in my garden at the moment, because that is how many I had planted last autumn. The reality is that there is only one that has an open flower right now. Why, you are asking? Because it was so warm here in Austin at the end of autumn and the beginning of winter that most of them bloomed in December. Well, that makes this one very precious so I wanted to share it with you. Especially because, except pansies, it is the only bloom in my garden in the moment. I hope the daffodils are making an appearance soon! Do you have Paperwhites planted in your garden? Another beautiful plant that I came across during our recent trip to Charleston, South Carolina. It is a white ginger lily, Hedychium coronarium. I love the white butterfly-like blooms very much, but what is truly extraordinary about these blooms is their heavenly, intense, fruity, tropical fragrance. I have not seen them in Austin, yet, so I don’t know if they will grow here, but I will give them a try. I truly don’t want to miss out on these beautiful blooms with their exquisite fragrance! For some odd reason I spontaneously envision myself sipping pink champagne on our veranda during a warm summer night (not that I drink pink champagne that often, ha!) and having a great conversation with someone I cherish about God and the world being surrounded by the wafting wonderful fragrance of this amazing plant! These white narcissuses have been blowing me away with their beauty and fragrance and I simply wanted to share them with you! Since I wasn’t home for most of the autumn I couldn’t force my own and bought these pre-forced at the grocery store. I find it a bit nostalgic in the best possible way to force bulbs indoors or buy them pre-forced to have them ready to bloom in the winter months. It is always a bit of a gamble if they flower at Christmas, though. For me it has become a bit of a tradition to have some forced bulbs indoors at this time of the year. Besides narcissuses my other favorites are hyacinths and amaryllises. Are you forcing or buying forced bulbs for winter or specifically for Christmas? Usually, I try to have fresh flowers on an antique trunk that we use as a coffee table in our family living room at all times. They bring me always joy and make the room so much more lively. Mostly I cut roses from the garden, but when they are not blooming, like right now in the winter, I also buy flowers. That can get quite pricey, though. What I have found to be a good alternative are potted flowering bulbs or plants because they last way longer than fresh cut flowers. How do you satisfy your flowery needs in the winter time? Current view from our kitchen into the family room. These filled paperwhites that I bought pre-forced at Traeder Joe’s are such a delight to look at and the fragrance is absolutely amazing! Do you have paperwhites gracing your home right now? If not, you must, they are simply lovely and bring so much cheer into the house in the winter time. Honestly, I find them a pain in the neck to force myself, so I am very happy that some grocery stores and nurseries are offering them now pre-forced and ready to bloom. And yes, we still have our Christmas tree up this year and I am not apologetic about it. It is no secret here on my account that I love the color white and white monochromatic gardens. If you have ever tried to grow a white garden, you probably agree with me that they are hard to accomplish. This one, which I photographed a few years back in Coronado, is a total success in my book, though! What looks like a simple cottage with a surrounding white cottage garden is in reality a multimillion dollar home with the so coveted ocean view which was dressed up with a white garden to make it even more appealing to potential buyers. My white camellias are in bloom! The variety is called camellia japonica 'Nuccio's Gem'. They haven't been blooming for some years now due to heat, drought, and my neglect. This winter though I have put down soil sulfur, fertilizer, mulch, and watered them well and they are paying back. Honestly, I had forgotten how beautiful they are. The blooms are pure white, perfectly formed and sometimes depending on the light conditions they almost glow.
