The 13th Doctor Announcement
Now it has been a couple of weeks since the announcement that Jodie Whittaker will be taking over the role of the Doctor on BBC’s Doctor Who. As someone who has been a fan of the show since the 50th anniversary when my friend introduced me to show, I was really excited to hear about the casting. Since I’ve gotten into Doctor Who, I have made myself aware about some of the politics and discussions about the show. One of the big discussions was about who will play the doctor in the future.
I was really excited hearing about a woman finally taking over the role, but as I imagined may people were not so thrilled. Since the announcement many people have taken to YouTube or other platforms in favor or against the change. I have listened to videos on both side of the argument. I have seen videos from diehard fans to people who don’t want to weigh in on the show. The main arguments that I’ve heard supporting the female doctor are: time lords can be both genders, if time lords’ regenerations are random by the time you reach 13 regenerations the odds are you will have a female at some point, if the Master can be female so can the Doctor, and it makes sense in the show to be able to change the gender. The main arguments I have heard against: this is just about politics and political correctness, and the Doctor becoming female ruins the Doctor’s character.
Now before I dive in on why I’m in support, I do want to talk about the arguments I have heard. Clearly since I’m in support I agree with most of the supporting arguments except the whole random regenerations idea. We know that while time lords can change gender most of them tend to stay in the same gender for most of their regenerations. So, it makes sense that most of the Doctors regenerations have been male up to this point. On the against side I would say that the Doctors character is malleable in nature. There are several key features that stick from regenerations to regeneration but many of the quirks change. As long as those key features stay intact, the Doctor is still the Doctor, which isn’t something that can be judged until the episodes come. And as for the politics, most of the people I’ve seen talking about this bring in other shows for examples of why gender swapping is wrong. They will point out that they aren’t huge fans of the show, and while I’m not really a fan of just taking a male character and adding an a to the end of the name and calling it a female, this isn’t gender swapping! Because time lords aren’t humans! IT IS DIFFERENT!!!! Also for anyone who says they are only two genders out there, holy crap you are so wrong!!! I heard about how it is forced diversity and even arguments about how females can’t lead males in war. I would like to say all diversity is good, and maybe women can’t deadlift like a man, but that women can bring things to a table that men can’t.
Now personally here is why I’m for the switch. When I was entering high school, I was a diehard reader. I could finish a book and a half in one night. I lived at book stores, had my own personal library in my room- over 3 bookcases, and most of my books looked like they were in a library since I reread all of them so much. I have thousands upon thousands of dollars of books in my room. I have a tattoo with a quote from one of my favorite book series. My favorite type of book was YA fantasy books with a healthy set of romances in them. I couldn’t go to bed at night if I hadn’t read for at least one hour. This didn’t last though. By the end of high school, I barely ever read, and I would stay away from book stores when I could. Only a year later, I was seriously mad when my mom would take me to a bookstore. Why? I couldn’t find anything that I wanted. Like in high school I wanted books with leads that I could see myself in. When I entered high school, I believed myself to be straight, but by the time I left I knew that I was anything but that. And I really wanted my heroes to be like me. I remember being in a bookstore with my friend not long ago, and she could see the pain in my face. She asked why I couldn’t find a book I wanted to read. My answer simple, I couldn’t find a fantasy book with a leading lady that was anything other than straight.
The reason I tell this story is people want to see heroes that reflect themselves. For years upon years’ young boys and men have been treated to a multitude of different types of heroes. In comics, for boys you could be Superman, Spiderman, Batman, Deadpool, Iron Man, etc. The list is long and diverse with each hero completely different. For girls- Wonder Woman or some other male hero with a female name, Bat Girl, Supergirl, so again you have Wonder Woman. In fantasy, boys you could be Frodo, or Spock or Captain Kirt, or Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Obi Wan, the list goes on. Girls, you can be Princess Leia. My point is that 2017 is starting to finally see some shift. Boys have their heroes, boys will always have their heroes, but it is time that the Girls get some too. The regenerations following can have the Doctor be male again, or really anything because again Time Lord, but we don’t know. The Doctor represents the best that humanity can be, and I say that the best is not just male but also female.
