A rap on the door pulls Steve from his thoughts, and it’s intuition that tells him its Danny. He pulls his head off of his arms, and sits up gingerly, his ribs sending pain shooting through him with every movement. To no surprise Danny’s already entered the office and allowed the door to close behind him.
“I brought you coffee, and pain meds.” Danny offers, placing the items on the desk in front of Steve before taking a seat in one of the chairs in front of his desk. Danny crosses his legs and looks to Steve with something that closely resembles the look that someone has when approaching an animal with no idea how it would react. Hesitant, almost suspicious. “You ok, babe?”
Steve doesn’t answer, at least not immediately. He gathers his thoughts as he pops a couple of the tablets into his mouth and washes it down with coffee that’s exactly the way he likes it. Then he leans back against his chair and starts rubbing at his eyes. “I don’t know,”
“Well, let's start physically. You’re here, did they discharge you or did you just go AWOL?” Danny asks, a hint of a joke in his words, but Steve doesn’t take the bait. “No, it's just some bruised ribs. Didn’t even leave the ER.”
“Well, I wouldn’t say that’s good but it should have been worse. I mean, what the hell were you thinking?” Steve can tell that the blonde man’s not angry, so much as confused. Steve doing something that’s putting is life in danger is one thing, but stepping in front of a bullet for a man that deserved to be six feet under was a new one. Even Steve knew that.
“I know. I’m sorry, I didn’t-”
“Danny, I’m fine, you don’t have to babysit me.”
“You could have died today, and your team, and I deserve to know why you pulled something like that. It’s ok to let your walls down sometimes.” Danny chastised, rubbing at his own chin, where a bruise is prominently peeking out from under his chin.
“I realized that I could have been that guy. After I thought my mom died, I was lost and then dad sent me to the mainland, and I was alone. I could have gone crazy and started killing people senselessly because of that loss and I realized that-” Steve swallows hard, and Danny drops his gaze, allowing Steve a moment to wipe at his eyes as he leans his head against the back of his chair.
“I’m glad you’re not.” Danny finally says, realizing just how close today came to ending up with his partner in the morgue. “And for the record, I’m really happy that you’re sitting right in front of me today.”
Steve shuts his eyes, and smiles. “Thanks Danno."
“You’re welcome, now, I’m driving you home, lets go.”
