The old joke started as all 4 of us started questin’ with four hunting horns and gala suits, and then the wiggler heads joined in the fun and now that may be the only way we play when we are all 4 together...

Each week I plan to feature an amazing creature, admiring God's fantastic artistry.  Hopefully it’ll brighten someone’s day to see something new and interesting if they haven’t seen it before. : )

The Spotted Garden Eel

Scientific Name:  Heteroconger hassi

Region:  The Indo-Pacific (The tropical waters stretching from the Indian Ocean to the Central Pacific Ocean)

Size:  Up to 23.6"(60cm) long, with a diameter of about .5"(1.4cm)

Interesting Note:  These unique creatures live almost their entire life in colonies naturally "glued" to the sandy sea floor by a mucus they secrete beneath the surface.  This behavior benefits them in two very important ways.  For one, being so anchored, allows them to simply catch their prey as it is pulled towards them by the surrounding currents.  If they were not anchored, they would be similarly pulled along by said currents, and gathering prey would be far more labor-intensive.  Secondly, if a predator happens by, they can quickly dart down into the hole housing the end of their tail.

Additionally and admittedly adorably, though this little creature almost never leaves its home, it is known to move its home closer to its potential mate during breeding season.

(And yes, if this critter looks familiar to you fellow Monster Hunter fans out there, it should.  Garden Eels are what the iconic "Wiggler" species is based on. : ) )
