I’m going to talk about that one specific episode of Camp Camp that I saw posted on @whumpsday ‘s blog because I watched the whole series after that and was obsessed with the show for DAYS and also somehow got myself invited to a private discord for it...somehow. 

anyway

it’s the episode S4E12 “The Forest” and in it, the character David goes through some SHIT. Like, he hits his head, gets knocked unconscious, wakes up, goes over a waterfall, nearly drowns, gets chased by bees, falls down a mountain, has to patch up his many bee stings, gets trapped in the rain when he tries to start a fire, gets attacked by a wolf (who by the way, scratches up his back SO MUCH), falls down a ravine and breaks his leg, then has a mental breakdown, then has to survive in the woods for an undetermined length of time that’s long enough to grow a beard, then is swung around by a bear, then sees the wolf rescue him from the bear and then die in front of him. and then at the end of it he just exhaustedly falls into bed and the scene cuts to him the next day back to being his happy-go-lucky self and that transition really does just leave a weight sinking in my stomach  

i gotta give you the context tho

so, the show is about a summer camp. It’s a very lighthearted show actually and you can watch it for free on youtube (though you have to watch the fourth season on the roosterteeth website) but this one episode. anyway, David works at the summer camp and he’s like...unnaturally positive. so happy. just a little guy in a silly goofy mood. 

but if you pay attention tho, you start to see the cracks and the ways that show that he’s actually not okay at all. flinches, crying, calling himself a failure....but its subtle 

so when he goes through what he does in S4E12, its such a drastic change from how he normally is and its like there’s been a buildup of negative emotions that just come bursting out and its so good. 

just...characters that are very silly but also profoundly sad

Whumpmas in July - Day 4 (July 4th)

Today’s topic gives you the chance to ramble about your favorite whumper-whumpee dynamic. The stoic vs. the intimate? The defiant vs. the cold? The scared vs. the reluctant? Maybe throw some enemies-to-caretakers in for fun. Maybe you like environmental whump—no whumper needed!

So, I don’t have much of a brain today, so I couldn’t really figure out what to write for @whumpmasinjuly​ Day 4 prompt. In lieu of actual coherent words, I made a graphic to convey my favorite whump trope. Enjoy :)

(Full disclosure: I made this on Canva in less than a minute using their “logo” section. Initially I was only going to screen grab the “creepy & intimate” part of it, but the “welcome to... handmade with love” from the original logo template was making me giggle like mad. So I kept it. Please, enjoy my bullshit!)

Whumpmas in July - day 4

Whumper and whumpee dynamics are fun. There's always something different with each one.

I mean there's the defiant one with a cold whumper. Whumpee is just another job for Whumper. They need to get the info, but Whumpee is proving difficult with their defiance. That could lead to anger and imagine the cold and calculating interrogator turns angry.

That sudden change could scare whumpee or whumpee might be amused by it. I mean who knows. Whumper could also hurt the Whumpee too much leading to reluctant caretaking.

Oh but then there's the intimate whumper calling. Whumpee all sorts of pet names and the like. Wiping away tears and holding them close after hurting them. That is bound to mess with Whumpee's brain.

Let's spice it up a bit, let's say Whumpee who thrives on affection and needs it. Is being tortured by Whumper who doesn't even care about them.

Or perhaps we have a reluctant whumper, who doesn't want to hurt whumpee, but has to since they don't want to get killed or worse.

In this situation Whumpee could be understanding since Whumper doesn't have a choice. Or they could mock Whumper calling them pathetic and weak.

Oh and a personal favorite of mine is if the whumper is a well respected hero, and our whumpee is a villain. Whumper!Hero doesn't even have to hide it, since everyone hates Whumpee!Villain

There are so many possibilities with everything! I can't possibly choose. That's be just unfair and rude.

Favorite Whumper/Whumpee Dynamic

I would say my favorite whumper/whumpee dynamic is creepy/intimate whumper who just railroads or punishes any suggestion from the whumpee that how they feel about the situation matters. I mean it’s pretty obvious from reading my work, haha, but it’s also my favorite to read!

I like defiant whumpees that are nonetheless floored and overwhelmed by whumpers who are in their space, all over them, who touch and push and pull and talk and won’t stop, who have nicknames for them that degrade and demean but the whumper treats it like they’re in a relationship and these are just sweet little nicknames for each other!

I like angry whumpees whose anger falters under the weight of a whumper who just doesn’t care about their anger, or punishes it, and gives them back sickeningly sweet affection and pain in return.

I like a whumpee who is outwardly compliant but inwardly desperate, despairing, and furious. I like a whumper who is outwardly affectionate or sweet but also sadistic.

Favorite Whumpee/Whumper dynamic

Defiant Whumpee vs. Creepy/intimate Whumper has got to be my go to dynamic.

Defiant Whumpees are definitely the type I actively seek out. That spark that can’t be smothered no matter what the Whumper does is something that will get me rooting for the Whumpee without question. When they bite back, have a sarcastic retort, or spit in the Whumper’s face, I am screaming out in pure joy. Seeing a Whumpee lose that spark, even for a moment, hurts so bad, but also makes it so much more liberating when it ignites again. Even if it’s years later, that moment where they put their foot down and fight back however they can makes my heart soar.

Creepy Whumpers are certainly the type to have my skin crawling. When their words and actions are just so slimy that I can be found shivering and sometimes even reading or watching with a blanket tucked up close to my face (cuz that is the highest type of protection right? Lol) They have a confidence that is ground breaking. They have all the right words and just create a disturbing atmosphere.

Now pitting these two together, ho boy, that is exquisite! The Whumper using their creep factor to get under the skin of Whumpee, all while the Whumpee is determined to not give in to this unsettling presence. It becomes a game of who will break first, the Whumpee or the Whumper? There’s always that moment where one of them just can’t stand it anymore. Obviously it’s easy for it to be the Whumpee (not to mention it serves the purpose of a whump fic) but I also love when it’s the Whumper who can’t stand the Whumpee’s defiance anymore.

Whumpmas in July 4: Favorite Whumpee/Whumper Dynamic!

Whumpers who relish in the control they have over Whumpee has always been my jam. Maybe in a creepy way, maybe not, but Whumpee is completely at their mercy. Will Whumper show mercy? That depends on the state of things... 

I love Whumpees who struggle between holding onto their defiance and pleasing Whumper just to avoid the pain. It hurts so much and they just want it to stop, but they can’t give Whumper what they want. Who knows where that slippery slope could lead? The internal dialogue that goes alongside that conflict is just *chef’s kiss* 

But those two traits put TOGETHER? The frustration and anger and pain over who will prevail in the end is one of my favorite story elements. There’s just something about being unsure in the face of danger, but still holding out against it that’s so interesting and fun to read and write. I don’t know if controlling whumper and defiant whumpee is played out or not, but I love it all the same!
