Whumpmas in July: Day Five
Whumperfly-Inducing Media
- Tangled: This movie was one of my childhood favorites, and for good reason. Between the possessive villain posing as Rapunzel's mother and the witty thief who narrowly avoids being hung to save her, Tangled is chock full of whumpy themes. I specifically love the obedient-to-defiant arc Rapunzel has, and the self sacrifice bit at the end (plus, there's some lovely gags and chains showcased in the movie's climax).
-Phantom of the Opera: The first time I remember feeling drawn in and enraptured by whumpy media was when my parents let me watch Phantom of the Opera. The ending had me hooked on the screen, watching as Raoul choked on the noose around his neck while Christine begged for his life. Was it appropriate for a child? Debatable. Has it remained one of my favorite whumpy movies of all time? Absolutely.
-Aladdin: For a company that focuses on children's cartoons, Disney has a surprising amount of whump in its films. Aladdin is definitely no exception, with the poor thief being tricked into taking a shady deal, one that almost gets him killed. From forced marriages to botched murders to underground dungeons to enslaved magical entities, this movie has enough whumpy themes to satisfy any whump thirsty adolescent (or adult).
