William Henry Dyson (1880–1938) was a famous illustrator and cartoonist in both Australia and England. He was born in Alfredton, near Ballarat. He was taught to draw by two older brothers (Ambrose also became a successful illustrator). In 1897, unbeknown to Dyson, his brother Edward submitted one of his sketches to the Sydney Bulletin Magazine and it was accepted. After finishing school, Dyson attended the Melbourne National Gallery school. He became a regular contributor to the Sydney Bulletin. Dyson married a talented illustrator named Ruby Lindsay. In 1909, The couple moved to London and he drew for Vanity Fair, the Weekly Dispatch, and the Daily Herald. During the First World War, Dyson served in the trenches of the Western Front and became Austalia's first war artist.  Dyson was heartbroken by the tragic death of his wife in the Spanish influenza epidemic of 1919. In 1925, he returned with his daughter to Australia where he continued to draw for publications.
