TIFF 2023 thoughts so far:

Your Mother's Son was pretty good. LOVED the performances + the composition, camera work, etc. i love anything that explores fucked up relationships... the portrayal of the relationships was nuanced, which, while obv a good thing, kinda works against the stated directorial intent--i.e., that the plot is a one-to-one political allegory. the political backdrop definitely is present though (albeit nowhere near as galvanizing as evidently intended... not that any work of fiction was ever going to start a revolution anyway), and the nonstop power plays made it a great watch. the ending was a bit abrupt.

Death of a Whistleblower was also good, but it didnt blow me away. it landed where a lot of liberal political dramas seem to: it states outright that the problem the protag is fighting is a systemic one (neocolonialism, media suppression, war profiteering), but by the final act all of the societal ills being critiqued have been distilled into a single corrupt businessman villain who can be defeated Within The System... it's just not half as toothy as it's trying to be. it was a pretty competent thriller though, good tension and some really strong early scenes, but the pacing is erratic and it keeps pulling punches.
