I shoved William cage off me and smacked him as hard as I could. He looked offended as he held his cheek, eyes wide and lips slightly swollen from the kiss he’d given me.
“what the fuck do you think you’re doing cage?” I asked, staring him down as he tried to get his bearings. “I asked you a question soldier.”
“I…” he looked at me before glancing around the room. “I…don’t…” he stood up slowly and furrowed his eyebrows. “I don’t know.” I glanced at the other soldiers in the room.
“everyone else dismissed.” I ordered. Cage stood at attention in front of me, his mind clearly still going a mile a minute. “Explain yourself. Quickly. Before you find yourself discharged.”
“I’ve done this before…” he murmured. “Bootcamp right?” I stared at him with my head cocked. “We haven’t gone awol yet…” cage broke out of attention and started pacing. “The…the blood. Shit that’s how they’ve been doing it. I thought it was the tech we’ve been using. Like something out of a video game. It’s them.”
“Care to share with the class cage?” I asked, crossing my arms and raising an eyebrow at him.
“major we need to go. Now.” He grabbed my arm and tugged me along behind him. “The attack today…it’s a massacre. No one makes it out alive. Except us. But never for long. One of those…things kills you. And I get drenched in its blood when I kill it.” I stumbled along behind him.
“you’re not making any sense cage!” I cried as he slipped behind the wheel of a jeep. “And you’re out of your mind if you think I’m coming with you.”
“I know you do.” He said, holding out his hand. “Because whether you want to admit it or not, you trust me.” I stared at his hand. Cage smirked at me. “Or you have a serious crush on me. And either one works for me.” I ground my teeth as I scowled at him before climbing into the jeep with him.
“shut the fuck up cage. One word of this to anyone and I will have you court marshaled.” I growled. Cage smirked and started to drive off base.
“sir yes sir.” He teased, glancing over at me with a smile. “I won’t be making the same mistakes as last time either.”
“what do you mean?” I asked. Cage seemed to hesitate.
“Once I realized I was living the same day over and over again, I made sure to get you. Like you’d told me to. This last time, we’d been on the road a week. This last time. And you did…admit…” he paused and shrugged. “We let out guards down. They came for us. And I couldn’t do anything to stop them because…” he glanced over at me with a knowing expression.
“oh.” I breathed out. “Ok. So we don’t…”
“yeah.” He nodded.
“and they hopefully don’t…”
“yeah.” Cage tightened his grip on the steering wheel. “I’m also going in the opposite direction. So hopefully if we do happen to…ya know…” I nodded. “They won’t come for us.” I nodded again. We drove in silence for a bit before I spoke up.
“you know I do…” I started, glancing at him out of the corner of my eye. “Since you were a major. But it just…”
“chain of command and all that. I get it.” Cage nodded with a smile. “Same reason over here.” I smiled softly at him as I nodded.
“maybe when all this is over…” I suggested, keeping my gaze in front of me on the road.
“yeah. And we survive it.” Cage agreed. “It would be nice.” He shot me a real smile as he looked over at me.
“William!” I screamed right before we crashed.
“ah crap. Not again.” He breathed before everything went black.
