The Caliph Vathek desires the knowledge of everything, and, with the urges of her witch mother #Carathis, wants to attain unequalled pomp, forbidden ancient wealth and power. The #Giaour, an agent of #Eblis, the Islamic counterpart of the Devil, demands cruelties and sinful acts from him to realize his wishes. Vathek falls in love with #Nouronihar, who joins his journey to "the subterranean palace", Hell, where the treasures they want to get are hidden and eventually the divine retribution punishes them and Carathis. Enthralling and surprising from the beginning to the end, full of unusual and fascinating events and elements, however, to the extent of being bizarre, Vathek is able to keep many readers' attention high. The unabating evil and dark fantasy, the relentless high tension, extravagancy and the grotesque elements are as evocative and fascinating as they are creepy and somewhat absurd. Evidently influenced by the Arabian Nights and having made a great deal of research, #Beckford successfully created an exotic and unique #novel by using elements from Arabian and Islamic cultures, even though it is not an authentic Eastern work from a found manuscript, as falsely claimed in the prefaces to the first editions. ~ «... the successes of the foolish and wicked form the first rod of their chastisement.» ~ «... Vathek, cuento árabe, de William Beckford. Novela de fantasía de ambiente oriental que inicia el género de la literatura fantástica moderna. Ha sido elogiada por Lovecraft y Borges, entre otros. El protagonista es el típico personaje soberbio, ansioso de conocimientos, como un Prometeo o un Fausto, que se deja tentar por los demonios y acaba encarnando al mal absoluto. Il romanzo orientaleggiante Vathek (titolo originale Vathek, o in alcuni testi Vathek, an arabian tale) rese il suo autore, il viaggiatore e scrittore inglese William Beckford, molto più famoso dei suoi libri di viaggio. Beckford compose Vathek in francese nel 1785, di getto, in tre soli giorni e due notti e lo pubblicò in inglese a Losanna nel 1787.Il romanzo ha oltre 160 note dell'autore (e del primo traduttore dal francese all'inglese), moltissime delle quali sono corpose e dotte.... Uno dei migliori romanzi gotici, anche in ragione della sua originalità: Beckford attinge alla sua passione per le Le mille e una notte di recente traduzione per descrivere il peregrinare del nefando califfo alla ricerca dei tesori dei re preadamitici – e delle molteplici avventure che vivrà lungo il cammino, fino all’inevitabile castigo. —Né vale sol questo a distinguernelo.
