I often think about how even the monastery, which marked wintrow's Good life, was something that was forced upon him. it was just as much a violation of his autonomy as everything else. he cried and begged for his parents to not make him go. he felt so tiny and unattended.

i love you characters who's identity is intrinsically tied to a place and their role in that place and are then ripped away. who have to learn how to live and who they are outside of that.

i love you characters who's faith is a core part of who they are as a person and deeply interwoven with their sense of self, but who find themselves having to abandon it or challenge it. who still carry it with them anyway, but only in small ways. who retain the values or the little rituals even if the devoutness is gone.

Just finished Ship of Magic in my reread. Wintrow and Vivacia working together in the storm felt very triumphant! Like finally accepting their bond for what it is and being able to communicate and do things they can't do on their own. Then we get to Kennit's interactions with Vivacia which gross me out.

He is very predatory towards her, and Vivacia is shown to enjoy it, which like, feels very Robin Hobb (derogatory).

Robin Hobb devising new ways to torture her characters for her and I suppose now my entertainment.

Why do I read these Robin Hobb’s books? I am very anxious these days about Wintrow, Althea, Keffira. Paragon and precious Amber. Not so much about Malta now. Even I wonder will Kennit’s leg heal. Kyle can drop dead all I care.
