The Wish Tree / A Wish

Deep in the forest, untouched by the city Lies a hawthorn, ancient and mighty. Stories were sung and tales, About the tree of wishes. Groups were taken to the monolith, Leaving coins, a tribute, a gift. Eventually they bloomed into adults, Forgetting the magic of the mayflower. Songs faded into mindless humming, Leaving the truth in the birds cawing. Years past and the mud tracks grew, The grove hidden, remembered by few.

Summer arrived followed by a lass, The wrens warn the others, being a grass. Thorns met step, yet she didn’t flinch. She was here to leave a tribute, take a wish. A hunk of granite was nestled between the roots, The tool of choice for breaching wood. She thumbed a thrice-pence lining her sight, Driving the rock down, a prayer following each strike. A wish for health? Fortune? Luck, who can say? The wish was for the forest and the fae. She thanked the tree for the wish, Turning not seeing the coin swallowed by the sapped lips.

Wanted to play around with themes and structure in this 24 line poem. I've based this in the wish tree that's local where I live (currently blocked off due to some construction). Hope y'all enjoy!
