Masen’s Backstory - Part 3
About 300 years had passed by and Masen was feeling quite content with her new Wizard life. She had helped to build large cities in the names of the Gods as well as small builds for the residents of the land she had learnt to be called Iolaea. Many people, far and wide, had come to her, asking her to build something for them for a reasonable price. The Gods of this land were… Interesting beings. Masen got along with them okay, but she couldn’t shake the feeling that there was something more than she was seeing.
However, she ignored this feeling and carried on with her job as wizard of the land. Her latest build was a huge library that had been commissioned to her through a letter, by some Witch by the name of Ziph. Masen was slightly confused at first, as she had never gotten a commission by letter before. Usually the requester visited her at her newly built towers and gave her a description of what needed to be built, and she would give them a price. She ignored the letter for a couple of days until she had a parcel arrive on her door step containing 32 blocks of diamond and another letter saying this was the payment for the library. Masen’s eyes widened when she saw the blocks but with no return address to reply to, she put the blocks into her vault and set off to build this grand library at the coordinates she had been given.
It took her about a week but soon Masen had completed the library. She left a note for this “Ziph” saying if anything else was needed to contact her. Masen then slowly made her way back to her towers, pondering who Ziph was and why they needed such a grand library. But as quickly as the thought entered her head, it flew right back out. Masen chuckled to herself and shook her head. It’s none of my business, so I should just leave it as is. She thought.
It was night time by the time Masen arrived at the huge tree outside her residence. The tree of Life, as it was called, stood proudly with the sound of the leaves rustling in the wind. However, Masen noticed another sound. The sound of a young girl crying. Masen frowned and carefully made her way over to the tree, only to find, not a young girl, but a young woman curled up at the base of the tree, sobbing her eyes out. Masen’s heart strings pulled at the sight of the young woman and slowly made her way over to her and crouched down to face her.
“Hello my dear, whatever is the matter?” She said in a soft voice. The young woman froze and looked up at Masen. Her lilac eyes met Masen’s green one, the other covered by her hair, and whimpered slightly before responding.
“M-m-my parents… Th-th-their d-d-” Tears filled her eyes once more. Masen couldn’t help herself and gave the poor woman a hug.
“Don’t worry my dear, everything will be fine.” She murmured, rocking the girl back and forth slightly. “Now, why don’t you come back to my towers for the night? I don’t want you to stay out here and get attacked by mobs now.” The two woman looked up to see some of the said mobs heading in their direction. Masen stood up and held out a hand for the young woman to take. She did and stood up, brushing the dirt off of her dress.
“Thank you…” The young woman murmured, her vibrant red hair falling over one of her eyes. Masen smiled and lead the young woman to her tower.
When they got inside, Masen lead the woman up to her private chambers. It took longer than Masen usually took as she normally flew to the top but as she had a guest, she stuck to walking. She temporarily removed the barrier from the stairs that lead to her quarters causing the young woman to gasp at her magic. Masen smiled and beckoned for the woman to head up. The woman quickly made her way up the stairs as Masen replaced the barrier behind her and followed suit.
When Masen arrived at the top of the stair case she smiled as she saw the young woman looking around in wonder at her room. Masen went over to the kitchen area where she had some food supplies stored in case she ever decided to invite someone up here. Until now she had not.
“Right my dear, I have got some food and drink for you if you would like.” Masen gave the woman some cookies and a glass of milk. The woman smiled and sat down at the table before starting to quietly much away on the cookies and taking sips of milk. The two females sat in silence for a while before Masen spoke up. “Oh my, I never even asked your name…” She smiled gently at the young woman, who swallowed down the last bite of cookie.
“Oh yes, well, my name is Keira, Keira Scordato.” The young woman smiled. “Thank you for this by the way, I-I’ll be out of your way tomorrow…” She said looking down at her hands.
“Oh no, you can stay here as long as you like my dear.” Masen said as she stood up. “I take it you are not from around here?” She asked as she went over to take Keira’s empty plate and glass. Keira chuckled slightly.
“No, definitely not. I’m from…” Keira stopped for a moment before continuing. “I’m from a large city, very far from here, but my parents… They didn’t like it. It was too controlled.” Masen nodded her head silently as she took the items to the sink. She had a pretty good idea on where Keira was talking about. She had been there before to do some building work and repairs and the place never failed to give her shivers down her spine.
“I believe I know where you speak of my dear, and I have to agree with that statement.” Masen murmured. Keira sighed and continued on with her story.
“Yes, so they decided one day that the three of us should escape, go live in Fiola’s fire city or somewhere. So they dug a tunnel out and soon we were home free… OR at least that’s what we thought…” Keira teared up again. “Yesterday, I went out looking for supplies and I was heading home when I saw these… huge guards come out of where we had been living. I-I hid behind a tree so that I wouldn’t be noticed and waited till they left. When I was certain they were gone I went inside a-a-and…” Keira started sobbing once more. “M-my parents… They w-were dead…” Masen felt tears come to her eyes at Keira’s sad tale and went over to her. Keira stood up and flung herself into Masen’s arms, sobbing into the crook of her neck. “I-I-I’m sorry b-b-but I’m s-s-so scared…” Masen wrapped her arms around Keira and held her as she cried.
“Don’t worry my dear. I’ll keep you safe. I promise.” Masen murmured into Keira’s ear. The two of them stood there for what seemed like hours, Keira crying and Masen whispering promises into her ear. From then on the two would be inseparable, or so they thought…
