Anon Request: Hi c: could you do a Newt x Female Reader 'surprise kiss' pls and thank u
Holy moly, okay! This is my first official fan-fiction! Hope you enjoy it. ♥︎
The walk from (Y/N’s) flat to Newt’s wasn’t too long, but London was so cold and unforgiving during the middle weeks of December that it made the trek feel ten blocks longer. London’s winter made her long for the warm evenings spent wrapped up in fluffy blankets in front of the common room fireplace. (Y/N) missed Hogwarts deeply -- she had never experienced real stress during her school years. True stress was now defined by hours of attending to the care of those magical creatures Newt would bring back to the enchanted basement of his home. (Y/N) had always shared the same affinity towards the fantastic beasts as Newt and quickly volunteered herself as a Magizoologist assistant shortly after graduation. As she trudged through the slush of wintry mix, she began to regret her previously enthusiastic offer.
✷✷✷
“Merlin, Merlin,” she murmured to herself as she shut the front door with her back. “Curse this winter.” Small clumps of snow fell off her jacket as she placed it on the rack beside the door.
The door to the basement was already open, which she found to be rather odd; she was typically the first one down there while Newt got himself up and ready for the day.
“Newt?” She called from the top of the stairs, placing one hand on the banister to peer down.
“Nifflers!” Was all Newt called back in reply.
(Y/N) huffed in amusement and quickly bounded down the stairs to help Newt.
It looked like Nifflers had taken over the entire basement. Several were scurrying around trying to gather any glistening object they could find. (Y/N) couldn’t help but laugh at the sight of the Nifflers wrecking havoc, but her giggles didn’t stop, even after she saw how flustered Newt appeared to be.
“(Y/N),” Newt said exasperatedly as his eyes darted from a Niffler at his feet to her face, “I’ve been at this for at least thirty minutes.” Of course, he would never admit that the reason for the Niffler’s great escape was entirely his. Before leaving the night before, Newt had been distracted by the way (Y/N) put the newly found baby Jackalope to sleep and completely forgot to latch the Niffler’s crate. The way she cradled the Jackalope in her arms and hummed to him was enough for Newt to forget about everything else in the basement. He had never met someone else who saw magical creatures in the same light he did -- he was definitely in love.
One of the Nifflers noticed the silver pendant that hung from (Y/N’s) neck and scampered up to her shoulder, trying to grab a hold of the necklace. “Not very subtle, but good try,” she giggled, gently prying the Niffler from her shoulder. How could she regret her commitment to these creatures? (Y/N) mentally kicked herself for her previous thoughts of regret as she placed the Niffler back in its crate.
Newt’s patience warmed her heart to the point where she felt like it swelled in her chest. He laid on his stomach underneath his desk, trying to reach the last Niffler. (Y/N) smiled to herself as she knelt down beside him and unclasped her necklace. “Come and get it,” (Y/N) hummed softly, bobbing the chain slightly to get the Niffler’s attention. Without warning, the Niffler burst out from underneath the desk, catching both (Y/N) and Newt off guard. They both tried to grab the Niffler at the same time, resulting in an entanglement of bodies rather than the capturing of the quick little thief.
“Oof, s-sorry, Newt,” (Y/N) said quickly, a light blush creeping across her cheeks.
“No, no, it’s not...” Newt’s voice trailed as he began to process how close he was to (Y/N). He was so close that he was worried she could hear his heart pounding against his chest. The beating echoed in his ears, and in a hasty attempt to silence it, he fell into her; crashing his lips against hers. Oddly enough, both of their heartbeats slowed down as the warmth of their lips subdued their senses.
A sudden tug made (Y/N) come back to reality as she realized the Niffler was still trying to get away with her pendant. She looked back at Newt with a wide smile and they both began to laugh. What a pleasant surprise.
