do you have any sylvia drake headcanons? i love her in game and i really wish they would expand more on how she died :’)

Hey there anon! I'm sure many of us do, what with the whole "fridged wife" trope and all that.

I'll also say that from a story-telling perspective, a sympathetic villain's backstory only works if we--the reader--have reason to believe that things were better before. We get nothing on Sylvia, so she tends to seem very overrated if you only assess her in-game appearances.

"How she died," huh? I've got some stuff for that! Mind my tone, this is about to get dense.

First, my interpretation of Sylvia Drake comes from Avalon, not Dragonspyre (which is strongly implied in-game). She grew up with her step-mother and her 2 sisters--one older, one younger--and she was on good terms with her family for the most part. I promise to expand more on her family later!

I did steal a canonical part of her character, that being her ability to learn fire magic in her young-adult years. In my version of the Spiral universe, most magic-users have a primary elemental school and then learn a secondary spiritual school, and Sylvia's primary was pyromancy.

I had a story written up about her finding a way to be both a strong, extroverted pyromancy and a nurturing, gentle theurgist at the same time. She finds that balance through teaching!

There's a standard to theurgy, especially with healing people and making sure you don't get complacent with your abilities, but she also knows that healed people heal others better than most. Hence why the kids loved her but also knew not to trifle with her. The Master of Death married her, after all.

I think she was definitely a tough grader, but in a way that all her students knew was fair. You’re dealing with people’s lives—you can’t afford to make mistakes and just “get by” in her class!
