T-shirt from the “Lollipops and Booze” festival at Cambridge, MA rock club T.T. the Bear’s place, taking place on dates between July 13–20, 1991.
In case you were wondering, yes, that festival name is a riff on “Lollapalooza,” the big, brand-new festival that was happening for the first time that summer. I mentioned “Lollipops and Booze” when writing about the July 1991 gig flyer for T.T.’s that includes these shows back in the December. At the time, I recalled I had a t-shirt for it somewhere... which ended up being a plastic bin in my bedroom closet.
One thing I see from this shirt that I didn’t realize at the time was that it was co-presented by WMBR’s Late Riser’s Club. WMBR is MIT’s radio station, and Late Riser’s Club—featuring a mix of new and classic indie pop and rock that I love to this day—was an almost-daily listen for me at one point. The show was broadcast during the time I had my ceramics class, and I’d make everyone listen to it while we were throwing pots. And it’s still on the air today! According to their web site, “for 34 years and counting.”
So the show had good taste, which explains the excellent lineup. As I mentioned in that previous post, I went to three of these shows. However, sadly I missed both the Superchunk and Swervedriver ones.
Anyway, this tee may be yellowed and kind of stained—and, in typical 90s fashion, ridiculously voluminous—but still a nice reminder of a most excellent week in my young rock club-going career.
