edit: I feel the need to clarify for everyone who is confused, my old design was blue but I updated her to be purple. tui didn't introduce some new fatespeaker lore to turn her purple or anything hahah
but! for the people interested, fatespeaker is technically described as being black with hints of blue and purple in her scales! so, is she purple in canon? maybe... maybe not ;P
For the headshots could you do the false dragonets next? They’re lowkey interesting to me
you guys know how i feel about not putting things in groups of three, But I can make an exception for flame because an unexpected amount of my woftumblr neighbors like him a lot.
i quite like how it turned out too!! i've always struggled with giving characters vibrant colors (i'm a warm dull fella, i fear), so i'm really happy that i was able to execute it this time
alr reposting these chonks ONE LAST TIME and no more
might continue doing them idk
⚠️⚠️⚠️ also decided to a little warning: since my art of chonks is kept posting on pinterest and people are just using it without even a little credit, i decided to close the permission to use these chonks. i used to let a few people to use them back then cuz they immediately came and asked me first and gave me credit. but from now on, PLS DO NOT USE MY ART!(unless its an art piece ive directly made to you and if u are using them as a pfp or something else, pls give credit)
Wings of Fire pride parade! I drew this for pride month last year and I’m thinking about redrawing again. If you have pride headcanons for any WoF characters, please comment them! I’d love to add some to this piece!
Ah, I see, a relationship question. Forgive me, I’m going to have to split your inquiry into multiple parts. This is so I can more easily put a “read more” separation in there and keep the length manageable.
The way I see it, Peril is fighting a bit of an uphill battle by courting Clay. Clay is a Mudwing, who tend to not really form lasting monogamic relationships naturally. There are some exceptions— Mudwings who apparently have formed strong romantic bonds, usually in inter-tribal couples where the other half might bring those ideas in. But by default, the concept of getting strongly attached to a romantic partner seems foreign to them. They just temporarily couple up to propagate their species and then quickly separate again.
We see this exemplified when Clay attempts to ask his mother Cattail about who his father is, and her response is essentially “Huh? Are you stupid? Why would I keep track of that??”
Now, Clay is a very loving person. He feels affection strongly and openly, and he is clearly very fond of Peril and wants her to be happy. At the same time I don’t see him as one of those exceptional Mudwings with “the spark”, who really gets the concept of romantic attraction. So I can imagine him being a bit puzzled by the idea, but also seeing that this is important to Peril.
So he goes “Okay, I will do my best to have this kind of relationship with you, even if I don’t fully understand it. Please bear with me as I work this out.” As Clay seemingly has no desire to extend this arrangement to anyone else, and he does genuinely enjoy spending time with Peril, this works out to at least resemble a regular monogamic relationship.
Whether this is fulfilling enough for Peril, to have a partner who doesn’t really get it but is trying what he can nevertheless, is really up to her.
I’ve personally never seen Peril and Turtle’s relationship as romantic. They seem more like buddies to me. I imagine they would talk about their separate romance troubles and trying to help the other out with them. Turtle would say “Kinkajou and I are really struggling; she just can’t seem to separate her real feelings from the ones the love curse forced on her.” Then Peril offers “Have you tried setting her mind at ease by burning her enemies into a crisp?” and Turtle goes pale and responds “Uh... I believe that is called sororicide...”
Extrapolation is the name of the game when you’re dealing with WoF side characters. That said, I think Riptide is consistent enough to be easily extrapolated from.
Riptide is the son of Webs, progeny of a publicly reviled figure who thus inherited a lot of the scorn directed at his father. He was also orphaned when Coral murdered Webs’ wife, so, you know, his childhood sucked a lot. He gives the impression of an outcast who receives unfavorable treatment from everyone and had to struggle for everything he has. There was little affection or kindness in his life, as anyone who started to bond with him would drop him like a hot potato the moment they found out who his father is.
You can see the depths of his loneliness in his first interaction with Tsunami. He goes from being on high alert due to coming from a secret meeting with the Talons of Peace to dropping his guard completely at the first hint of being flirted with. Like, Tsunami is over here babbling nonsense and coming off as insane (due to not speaking Aquatic) and Riptide’s first thought at this vaguely affirming string of gibberish seems to be “This is my only chance at happiness, I’m taking it.”
At first they seem kind of boring as a couple; indeed that was my first impression of them. But on the basis of knowing about what Riptide’s life was like, I can get behind it. He displays a lot of vulnerability if you look for it. Tsunami dislikes how he keeps lying about his life, but it makes sense he would do that if you look at his past. He’s desperate to keep secrets because he is afraid this new friend he made is going to abandon him as soon as the name “Webs” comes up. He’s been through that exact scenario countless times before and he’s terrified of being left alone again.
And then when the truth comes out and she doesn’t leave him, he shows more vulnerability by asking “Can you tell me what my father was like?” Because the last time he saw his father was when he was one or two years old. So there is some tenderness between them, even if it’s kind of buried.
Riptide is a very under-explored character in general, to be honest. You could write a whole story about the son of Webs and his struggle for self-actualization.
I’ve already talked a bit about my opinion on this age retcon here. What I’ve found there was that the only reason Deathbringer needs to be as old as he was made is so he can have a conversation with Six-Claws—a conversation where they don’t form any meaningful rapport whatsoever and Deathbringer just plotsplains at him for a bit before vanishing.
That one limp scene is not worth the litany of grief it has caused. It is completely superfluous and we lose nothing by excising it from canon. In the same post I’m proposing a revised timeline in which Assassin can still happen without Assassin assassinating Deathbringer’s integrity as a character. That’s my contribution to Deathbringer fans who don’t want the character they liked in book 3 get retroactively turned into something they have to be ashamed of.
Yeah, that is tragically correct. The way it is written, Fatespeaker ends up as Starflight’s (pardon the term) “rebound chick”. The consolation trophy that, just prior to them coupling up, is identified by Glory as “Sunny’s soul twin”, so the story implicitly frames her as “Sunny Lite: I can’t believe it’s not Sunny”.
This is really unfortunate because I like Fatespeaker a lot, and she had so much potential which she didn’t get to realize.
I’ve said this once before (might have been in my post about Starflight), but when I think about this part in the story, I like to extend the time skip between Arc 1 and Arc 2 from half a year to three years. It gives the DoD a bit more time to grow up and also to physically build the school they’re going to run.
In that same motion I like to place the start of Starflight and Fatespeaker’s relationship inside those 3 years. Fatespeaker is with Starflight during that time and helps him come to terms with the loss of his vision, and throughout that they realize they have feelings for each other. NOT immediately after the Sunny rejection.
That would give Starflight enough time to move on and for both of them to create a much more healthy and lasting relationship.
I get what you mean. I think it would be nice to keep Sunny as someone who isn’t really interested in that kind of thing and have her be a representative of an aromantic/asexual orientation.
If we had to make a guess who this “perfect dragon” is though, I believe we are surprisingly well-equipped to do so.
Let’s operate from the assumption that this is a character who was named and has appeared in person, who is currently single and around Sunny’s age, and who has never been in the same location as her for more than a couple minutes (otherwise you wouldn’t need to get them in the same location).
Fortunately for us, Arc 2 generously physically consolidates the vast majority of eligible characters into the Jade Mountain Academy—which Sunny is present at—and thus eliminates all of them in one fell swoop!
This, to my count, leaves us with seven candidates left: Lynx, Snowfall, Sirocco, Rattlesnake, Ochre, Squid, and Hailstorm.
I’m going to eliminate Sirocco and Rattlesnake right away, because they’re only technically eligible on account of their unknown age (we only know they are older than Qibli). Also, they are bit characters with poor personalities that don’t compliment Sunny at all.
Ochre is eliminated because he was with Sunny in the rainforest, after being extracted from the Nightwing island.
Lynx and Snowfall... My familiarity with both is a bit shaky... but I get the impression these two may be being set up kind of for each other, maybe? I’m going to tentatively eliminate them on that basis.
Leaving us with Hailstorm... and Squid. While I personally would find it hilarious if it was Squid... I don’t think it’s Squid. I believe the mystery dragon is Hailstorm.
I’m not sure at first glance what Sunny and Hailstorm could have in common. I suppose they both were the voice of kindness in a harsh family. Also, they were both yellow for at least some portion of their lives.
Do the DOD play any role in the AU? I'm super obsessed with this tbh your writing is elite!
funny you should ask....
character batch 2: electric bugaloo
When Sunny escaped the mountain, she finally had the sunlight she needed as a SandWing and the moonlight she needed as a NightWing, so her adult (dragon equivalent of)plumage came in with different colors.
She suffers from chronic baby face and stunted growth. I headcanon some SandWings can drop their tails like some lizards can, and her tail is still growing back from when Darkstalker rose right in front of her and scared her half to death. The scar on her wing is from Kestrel and the others are from recent fights.
I did two sketches of Clay, I'm not 100% happy with either of them. I'd like to redraw him and make it so you can actually see the jackalope look i was going for in the second drawing. He's a healer (kinda, he wasn't fully trained when all this started, but any skills are better than none in an apocalypse.) that helps dragons with donated supplies the DoD receive. He has patches for each of the DoD on one bag, and I'd like to put something for his bio sibs on the other bag. Tsunami signed his sling back when he first got it. Almost all his scars are from Kestrel. He uses his wings to help him walk/balance sometimes. The only reason he lets himself sleep whatsoever is so he'll be awake enough to help injured dragons. Sometimes desperate dragons ask him to help someone beyond saving, he keeps notes for dragons they never got to say goodbye to in case he runs into them. He never lets himself forget the names or faces of anyone who doesn't make it. I'm so excited to write him, I really miss the dragon he was in book 1.
STARF! im using his cutie cuff design because i love it... basically my explanation is that moonborn NightWings (even if they don't actually get those powers) hatch white/silver and then their normal coats come in soon after hatching, but being raised underground messed it up. He's always been paranoid, and running around lawless Pyrrhia as a celebrity while also blind is just doing wonders for him. /sarc. He's very distrustful and hates staying in one place too long.
Fatespeaker! i originally wanted to make her real freaky looking but that didn't fit her and she wouldn't cooperate anyway. She's based on a jumping spider. She's started doubting her "visions" and is wondering if she's even useful at all, so she's doing everything she can to be. (Hunting, scouting, taking less food and water, ect.) Since she isn't very well known she often "scouts out" settlements and rebel groups to make sure it's safe before the DoD go in.
When Darkstalker first rose, Starf, Fate, and Tsunami were still at Jade Mountain, Glory was in the rainforest, and Sunny and Clay were in the Mud Kingdom discussing how to make JMA better for sib troops. Tsunami, Starf, and Fate were the some of the first dragons Qibli gave enchanted earrings to (three for them, three for sunny, clay, and glory.)
Darkstalker can't enchant you without your permission, but he can get into your head since he was hatched under a blood moon and psychologically torment you until you give him permission. And even if he doesn't get that in writing to make it permanent, just a bit of acceptance can put you under his control for at least a while. So it's just safer to have the earrings that keep NightWing powers from working on you and keep animus magic from touching you. Since Darkstalker can and does often enchant the rain itself, it's not even safe to touch water without one.
Starf, Fate, and Nami were kinda just sitting around at Jade Mountain waiting for Sunny and Clay to get home, until Nami went on a whole tirade to Starf about how she doesn't want to deal with any of them anymore and left. Starf and Fate didn't believe a word of it and left to follow as soon as they could, but only managed to get themselves lost for a few weeks before they found Clay and Sunny, who had found JMA empty and gone looking for them. They headed to Queen Thorn (who'd lost control of most of the tribe) for protection and help, but Thorn had to kick all of them except Clay out because her dragons couldn't feel safe around NightWing blood. All she could offer them was a minor surgery to implant the earrings right into their scales so they couldn't be taken away, which they accepted. (that's what the little stitches are.)
Now they travel around Pyrrhia from rebel group to rebel group. (rebels are dragons who refuse Darkstalker's control.) Starflight writes plays (usually about heroic historical figures) which Sunny and Fatespeaker act out using masquerade-type masks to differentiate characters. Starf is pretty introverted and tries to avoid their audiences, and Clay helps whoever he can. They're considered national treasures to a lot of Pyrrhians, so pretty much everyone is either out to get them for one reason another or doing everything they can to help them. They're a bit healthier than most rebels since they receive a lot of donations. (which is also where Clay gets his supplies.) Their main goal is to find Tsunami and Glory, so they're making their way east to their kingdoms right now.
Princesses Tsunami and Glory!!!
When Nami was still with Starf and Fate, a certain someone who was originally gonna be in this batch before i changed my mind stole one of the earrings they were saving for Clay, Sunny, and Glory. Tsunami knew her friends all needed the protection more than she did and it wasn't safe for them to be around someone Darkstalker could get into. But they'd never let her leave, even to keep them safe. So she pretended to get fed up and snap with Starf and gave a whole rant being as mean as she could saying she was tired of them, brought up just about every fight they'd ever had, twisted every opinion she'd ever shared to point to her hating them, and then stormed off. She replaced the stolen earring with her own, took a dreamvisitor to keep an eye on her friends, and disappeared into the night.
One of Darkstalker's first acts after becoming king of the NightWings was to take over a second kingdom. In order to gain the trust of his NightWings and gain control of those who stayed with Glory, he conquered the rainforest without mercy and made every captured RainWing a second-class citizen like the NightWings originally wanted. Those who escaped didn't fair much better since most of Pyrrhia views them as less than dragon (or at least very easy to control), so it's common at big rebel gatherings to see a RainWing being auctioned off in exchange for resources as servants and/or venom farms. Princess Glory, only heir to now-dead Queen Grandeur's throne, managed to escape Darkstalker, only to be caught and sold by SkyWings. (Since RainWings are really good at mimicking voices, she uses a male voice to avoid being recognized as Glory.) Nami saw Glory being sold at an auction and had to use her dreamvisitor to buy her. Now they're travelling together. They've had to turn to crime to save up resources for survival and buying RainWings to free: Tsunami "auctions off" Glory, and then they team up on the buyer and steal all their excess resources along with the payment.
Kinkajou!!! Like a million people have asked me about her :3
Before Turtle's death, he had enchanted Darkstalker to forget about him using skyfire and some of Darkstalker's scales from under the mountain. He tried to cast the same spell on Kinkajou, but used skyfire and some of Jou's blood instead since he couldn't get anything of Darkstalker's and hoped it'd work the same. This tied the spell to Jou instead of Dark, though, so instead of a blindspot in Dark's vision, it's more like a forcefield around Jou, and now no one can remember her. Not even Turtle to fix the spell. Now he's dead. At first, Kinkajou thought this spell would be great and help her save the world, but being a living ghost has its effects. She's stopped preening her feathers and taking care of herself, and is questioning if she's even still alive. It's not fun anymore.
Turtle felt his sense of dragonhood dissolving into the ocean like a mist of ink. If no one saw you, were you real? If no one spoke to you, how long could you go on existing before disappearing completely? -Book 9
you can pry my fugly scene-ish jou and chimera sunny and starwhite from my cold dead hands
also a lot of rainwing auctioneers wear masks which is very convenient to prevent Tsunami from being recognized
