Gem nudges Joel’s shoulder. He ignores her, obviously, so she nudges him again. He shoves her, and she shoves him back, and it quickly devolves into two thirty-year-olds having a slap fight in the middle of their dining room. “Guys, stop,” Pearl grumbles, but her voice is muffled by the fact that she’s saying it to the kitchen table.
Joel smacks Gem one more time for good measure, and she sticks her tongue out at him. “I need to redye my hair. Can you text Lizzie and ask her if she’s up for another dye date?”
Joel groans. “Just get her blummin’ number from Eefo and text her yourself.”
“But Joooooooooel,” Gem whines. Joel shoves her. “Etho’s scary. And I don’t want him to think I’m trying to steal his girlfriend.”
“You are trying to steal his girlfriend,” Joel points out. “Since before they were dating.”
“Yeah, but I don’t want him to know that. Besides, you and Scott are invited too.”
Joel stands from the table and walks into the kitchen. They bought this house together almost ten years ago now. It was one of the first purchases they each made once they started making the big bucks, and to date the only joint purchase they’ve all made together. It’s a nice place; three bedrooms so they don’t have to share, three bathrooms so Gem can have her makeup and Pearl can have her hair care without them bothering each other, and so Joel can minimize his dysphoria from sharing with his sisters. It’s not huge, it’s not extravagant, but when they’re all free they spend weekends here together.
Joel’s always been a bit afraid that the industry would ruin his relationship with his sisters. It already ruined his relationship with his parents. Or that if the industry didn’t get to it first, that eventually they would stop prioritizing him. That hasn’t happened yet. And he’s definitely not going to stop prioritizing them. As much as he likes Bdubs, as much as they connect and they have a good time together, there will never be anyone who gets him like his triplets do.
“I will touch up my green streak,” he tells Gem, filling up a glass with water. “That’s all you’re getting from me.”
“I saw a really nice mint at Sally’s the other day—”
“No,” Joel says firmly as he resumes his seat. “I use Strawberry Leopard’s Money for one lock of hair in my fringe, and that’s it. No matter how hard you try to sell me on other colours.”
“You’re the drummer for one of the biggest touring bands in the world,” Pearl points out. “You make half a million dollars a year, and you’ve written seventeen songs that have been in the top 100 in the last year and a half. And you still dye your hair at home with your sister like you’re sixteen years old?”
There’s a familiarity to the ribbing. Obviously a salon could do it better, and it’s not a matter of whether Joel can afford it. But he doesn’t want to be one of those famous guys who has other people to do everything for him. He wants to keep in touch with who he is. It’s lame and cheesy, he knows, but it’s important to him.
Gem leaps to his defence, though. “Hey, he’s really doing his best. He doesn’t have time to go to a salon, he’s too busy doing mushrooms with Skizz and getting railed in the backseat of his 2021 Toyota Corolla.”
Okay, so it’s not a great defence.
Joel rolls his eyes. “I hate you,” he tells them both. “You’re stinky and I hope you die.”
Gem turns her attention back to him. “Come on, Joel, if you’d let me put a little bit of blue in your hair—”
“Come on, Gem,” he interrupts, but the laughter stains his protest anyway. “I put a green streak in my hair for you twenty years ago. Can’t that be enough?”
The look of mischief that settles across Gem’s face is one that Joel’s all too familiar with, and he hates it. Mostly because it always means exceptionally fun things are coming down the pike. “And you’ve maintained it for twenty years,” she sing-songs at him. “Because you love me and I’m always right.”
sun and moon ahh siblings... doomed ahh siblings... haunted by the narrative and their own loneliness siblings....
does anybody else care about this duo. please wolf/godblings are everything to me... ask me about them...
more under the cut
when i say I am INsane about them i am Not Kidding
I have so many little details in their design im just so. i dont even really see them as sun and moon per say but they embody those very well. joel was initially supposed to be smirking/half smile, but the frown kept pulling at me. he is just so angry at the world. pearl is amused at his antics, as a sister would, she doesn't take his anger very seriously. the real emotion underneath is hurt
I really really like how i wrote them in SWU... Pearl leaving because she doesn't think Joel needs her and is fine on his own, while Joel was always the problem child and felt he needed Pearl and was no one without her. This building into resentment and hatred on his part, while Pearl became almost aloof and detached from their past, her own emotions and Boatwright. Lost in the clouds and lost in the dust.
they're twins but they couldn't be more different, yet they still retain aspects of each other... Joel's face is soft and feminine in an almost hidden way like he's trying to hide the part of him that resembles Pearl. Pearl's hair is straightened but still curls stubbornly like the past that keeps catching up to her. Joel's messy and uneven, vibrant brown hair and Pearl's long flowy and muted brown hair.
the background with the moon in front of the sun and Pearl in front of Joel in the same way, how she seems to be more adjusted than him but her shine is muted,..,.,
does anybody care about them. why am I 3 out of the 5 fics under the Joel and Pearl are Siblings Tag (WHICH IS NOW CANON HOLY SHIT IVE BEEN BEGGING FOR IT FOR 2 YEARS?!?!)
